    Got my greyhound approval

    Icy this is WONDERFUL NEWS!!![sm=dance.gif]

I am so excited for you!  Never fear..if they don't have a female that is the right fit for you they should soon enough. I am not sure how long this particular group usually fosters their dogs for but perhaps there is another dog or two getting ready to be available for adoption.

How old is the female (her profile didn't say)?  Also, is it the foster family that is saying she is high strung?

That's awesome news!!  You're one step closer to getting a Grey of your own.  I'm so excited for you.

    [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]Hooray!

    Congrats on getting a grey---they're greyt. [:)]

I second the motion that you wait if she seems to be high strung. Go for the more mellow dog and it will work better for both of you.

I saw you're gone all day and you should realize that although this is an adult dog who CAN physically "hold it" for many hours, most racing greys are turned out every few hours on the days they are not racing---so they are used to an am potty, mid day, supper time and pm turn out at bedtime. Just something to keep in mind if she hasn't been fostered for very long. If you do decide to get a "dog walker" don't worry about the grey having a problem with someone they've only met once taking her out for a walk.

When I volunteered for a greyhound rescue group I would give greys a bath right after they got out of the kennel truck. And I washed them thoroughly, if you get my drift, and neither the males nor the females gave me any grief. They were all so sweet.[sm=biggrin.gif]

I was surprised to see her age as many greys "wash out" at about 2 years old. If she's 4 1/2 she was probably a good racer. Maybe she might like lure coursing??

Best wishes on the new addition to your family!

Okay, far be it for me to tell you how to run your life, but I think you should request that lovely brindle boy.  Here's why:

    1. I have a brindle boy sighthound and he is the most amazing dog to cross the face of the planet.  The brindle grey is about the same color as my brindlewonderkid.

    2. I knew someone who once had a grey named Mr Bob.  Mr Bob was a wonderful, intuitive therapy dog.  This brindle is also named Bob.

    3. I happened to read this thread and put all this together for you.

Now you may or may not believe in coincidence, but really I think my points are very convincing.  [:D]

Really, good luck in whatever you decide.

Congratulations on getting approved!! [:D] I definitely think it's best to wait for a dog that you feel is a good "fit". You'll have them for hopefully a decade or more, so waiting just a little while is definitely worth it. The right personality can mean the difference between dog ownership being a joy or a burden.

Just based on what's written, I'd go for the black male:-))  He sounds like a good boy that would fit in anywhere.

That's great to hear you were approved!

I would definately wait to find a dog who's the best match for you. Go ahead and meet that gal you've got your eye on and see what you think. "High strung" is in the eye of the beholder, after all. But if it doesn't click, be prepared to be a little bit bummed and wait until your summer vacation to try again. It's best to wait until just the right dog comes into your life than to force it and wind up with a dog you have a hard time bonding with. When you do wait and you do find that extra special friend, it is so worth the time you spent waiting, believe me.

If you have been approved by one organization who places racing greyhounds, it should be a snap to get approval from other organizations throughout the country and expand your choices.  They are really pretty good judges of what they have, so if you truly want an animal "ready to enjoy retirement", most will take that into account and help place a less hyper animal.  Sometimes an animal sustained an injury, just as horses do, which inhibits the racing and running, but doesn't interfere with recreational walking-the injury being the source of their retirement.  We have friends who have adopted 4 thus far and wouldn't dream of doing any differently, so hang in there and the perfect animal for your home will come along.  It is hard, but the patience will be rewarded

    Bump!

Have you been to see them yet or are you holding out for a calmer female?

Congrats on being approved, the perfect dog for you is just around the corner.  You must be so excited, I am really pleased for you.
