    blackmouth curr?????

has anyone ever heard of this "breed"?  i looked on the AKC website and there's nothing listed, but some guy in my old neighborhood has a sign in his yard boasting "purebred blackmouth curr pups".  i live in NE texas.  as i understand it, "curr" means mutt.  any thoughts?

A Black Mouth Cur is a hound dog.  Just run the name in Google and you'll find tons of sites on them.

They are a long standing American breed developed in the south eastern hill country.  Another dog in a smaller version is the fiest.  Both dogs are essentially hunting, varmit dogs.  They have never applied to the AKC, dont remember about UKC.  They do have some registry but I am not sure how it is maintained.

They are UKC registered and compete in their hunting trials, as well as those for their breed club (if I'm not mistaken).

    Official U.K.C. Breed Standard
    History
The origin of the Blackmouth Cur is uncertain. Some writers have claimed that the breed originated in the mountains of Tennessee while others believe the breed originated in Mississippi. In any event, these dogs were widely used by early American settlers as all-round working dogs. As Americans moved west, the Blackmouth Curs moved with them, serving as a hunting dog and family guardian.

The Blackmouth Cur was recognized by U.K.C. on November 1, 1998.

If well bred, they are nice dogs. :)

I believe they're UKC, not AKC. Beyond that, I have no clue. Never seen one.

Someone asked me once if Conrad was a blackmouth cur. I must confess, I was a little surprised because up hear above the Mason-Dixon line they are very very very rare. But I guess I could see it a little, given Conrad's own houndy background.

Oh yes!  Most opening days for deer I won't leave the house & take the boys out on leashes.

Well, you know they say that Pennsylvania is Philadelphia on one side and Pittsburgh (yay) on the other and Alabama in between! Hunting is big here, but more deer hunting, which doesn't include dogs, and some coonhunting. But the blackmouth cur is really more of a south and west breed, pretty rare even in other places of the country where hunting is done.

Besides, here in the big city no one knows nuthin about hunting dogs. My coonhound is a celebraty at the dog park.

We have tons of curs around here. Some of them kind of look like ridgebacks. They're nice dogs, very cute.

I still have to do Google. Are black curs black?

They aren't as rare as they used to be up here now that some southern shelters are participating in doglifts and rescues in cooperation with northern shelters.
