My foster puppy.

    My foster puppy.

This little fellow was a stray and so we know nothing about him. The vet believes he is about 11 weeks old. I think he weighs around 15 pounds. I just brought him home last night and the pictures aren't the greatest as he is in the crate, but all I have for now.

That's what I'm trying to figure out, whether he looks like he might be a pure cattle dog. He came from the shelter saying he was a 4 month old Jack russel. I don't know what she was thinking. I took one look at him and said he is much younger than that.....this was about 2 weeks ago. I also said he looks almost like he may be a pure cattle dog, though he isn't quite as stocky as most of the pictures I've seen. Our vet thought the same, although she said that he acted much more outgoing ( he was giving her lots of kisses) than most of the cattle dogs that she had seen. He is energy city that is for sure.
Our agility instructor has cattle dogs. I've spoken to her about him and I've sent the pictures on to her.

Okay he's about 5 months old now and really hasn't grown a whole heck of a lot. He's around 19 pounds. So, wondering what other breeds everyone thinks he might be, besides the cattle dog. The first couple of pictures were about 3 weeks ago, to help to give you a rough idea of his size....comparison against the cat. The picture of just him was taken the other day. He's grown a bit but we are talking only a difference of maybe a pound ...a wee bit taller and a wee bit longer.

    still looks acd to me!

Lots and lots of ACD. Maybe a dash of JRT or even PB....but very little.
ACD's end up between 30-45lbs. and 17-20" high so there's a benchmark for you.

he is a mix,,, no way near enough substance to be a full ACD.

I was thinking ACD, ACD, ACD... but then when I saw the last photo of his face instantly I was reminded of a pug or a boston.. something about those very round eyes and the muzzle- the way the jaws come together... but then after thinking about it a little more- I thought of spaniels, too.

I agree with mrv that I just don't think he has enough substance to be pure cattle dog. His head and legs are just so tiny and I find it hard to believe that he will grow that much more.....but then I'm not used to puppies and not sure of the growth rate. Have done some research on it and it looks as though he could still add on another 10 to 15 pounds. That would put him at the correct weight. Height wise, as near as I can figure he is maybe 17 inches....a wee bit too squirmey for me to figure it out for sure. So the height might work out too, but that head and those legs and the longer thin body just doesn't seem to be changing much. With the perfect cattle dog color though I just can't imagine a mix, but then I'm not too up on the genetics of it all. Anyhow here are a couple more pictures. Don't worry about the cat, he keeps coming back for more. I would never leave the dogs loose with this cat though. This is allowed only under supervision as I know how quickly things could change.

What one needs to remember about bone and substance...is that it can be gained or lost..in a single breeding. I see Beagles every day that have the bone of IG's...that does not make them not Beagles...it simply makes them not ideal from a conformation standpoint....and it sure doesn't mean a darned thing about their not being Beagles in ability, mind, or heart [;)

I have seen husky's with itty bitty bone...and Akitas that look like greyhounds in big fur suits [;)] When I look at a dog I always remember that not everyone out there breeding is doing it with ideal specimens lol.

Yeah, those eyes threw me off too!  I've seen boston mixes with very similar faces.

Whatever he is, he's a cutie!
