The only curly coated retriever that I have seen in person was at a dog show, and it was trying to attack other dogs as they walked by its crate.
Don't confuse that for bad temperament. When a show dog is owned or shown by a big time breeder/handler, the dog is often on the road more than it is at home, and thus, his crate becomes his space. They become territorial over it. "STAY AWAY!!! MINE!"
Curlies do it, Goldens do it, Labs do it, Maltese and Shih Tzu's do it, Chihuahuas, Pugs, and GSD's do it. There are dogs in every breed that behave that way, and it is not always because of dog aggression or poor temperament...it's just their space. My Old Man is that way about his crate space and his truck. I don't take issue with it...it's his space. Others shouldn't bother him.
