Look at the Neapolitan Mastiffs' cheeks!

The cheeks of a Neapolitan Mastiff are sooooo droopy!  I've never seen anything like them!  They are so ugly, they're cute!

I couldn't imagine owning a dog like that.  They just aren't my type.  It would almost kind of scare me...[8|]

Neos are working dogs.  They take their guarding VERY seriously. FWIW< this Neo has cropped ears.

Gosh, they definitely ARE my type of dog![:D]  I've always loved Neo's. But lorib is right- they take guarding very seriously and they're definitely not dogs for everyone.

I've never met one but with all those wrinkles they must smell pretty bad.

Oops forgot to add, I have a funny story about one of these dogs.
I had a bf in high school, his mother had one and I took my lil brother, Thomas who was 5 at the time to go see him. The dog had never really been around kids and (ha ha sorry I laugh just remembering) for some reason he assumed he was to be Thomas's protector and would try and sit on him and heard him, it was hilarious. So they are in the other room playing and we hear Thomas's lil cute voice saying "sis, sis help" We walk in to see this dog full on laying on my brother, she had him pinned, all we could see was the top of hid head under her chest and a lil arm sticking out the side. She was trying to shower him in kisses but was being SO pushy about it. She wasnt typically like this, she was usually very aloof and wary of visitors!

That is by far the wrinkliest neo I've ever seen! They aren't all that wrinkly.

Would you guys believe that someone acually walked into our animal shelter off the street and surrendered one of those a few months ago?!?! My jaw was on the floor. There's so much wrong there I don't even know where to begin!

Fortunately, a neo rescue was notified and came to get the poor guy. This was in fact the same neo rescue that the people who surrendered him got him from, but they were too lame to actually return him to the rescue. I think they were ashamed (and rightly so!) and thought if they brought him to us they could get rid of him and no one would be any the wiser. Jerks.

Houndlove,
WOW, my jaw would have dropped as well, thats a pretty penny to just drop off. You'd think the original rescue woulda screened a little better gosh. I mean they wouldnt just hand one over to a new dog owener right?

They were actually the opposite of new dog owners. The reason they were surrendering him? The couple was about to get married and consolidate households and they had too many pets all together. So one had to go and apparently this neo had made some growly noises over his food dish to one of the other dogs, and he was the biggest and slobberiest, so he pulled the short straw.

I just happened to be hanging around the shelter when he was surrendered and just sort of stood there aghast as they went through the paperwork.

That's what drives me nuts about these people.

How hard would it have been to have found the Neo a good home, with people who knew about the breed? Sure it would have taken a couple months but isnt that better than dumping the dog at a shelteR?

If you are going to get rid of your dog, PLEASE find them a good home on your own, there is no sense in surrendering them to the shelter where they could possibly be euthanized and at the very least be extremly discomforted and stressed out. Sterlilize (spay/neuter) then find him/her a good home and ask a small adoption fee.

Ditto, I would have moved into a bigger house JUST for such a regal dog!

One of the top breeders for AKC Neo's right now.

Below is the AKC standard:

"Large in comparison to the body. Differentiated from that of other mastiff breeds by more extensive wrinkling and pendulous lips which blend into an ample dewlap. Toplines of cranium and the muzzle must be parallel. The face is made up of heavy wrinkles and folds. Required folds are those extending from the outside margin of the eyelids to the dewlap, and from under the lower lids to the outer edges of the lips. Severe Faults: Toplines of the cranium and muzzle not parallel. Disqualifications: Absence of wrinkles and folds.

FCI standard:

HEAD
: Short and massive, with a skull wide at level of zygomatic arches; its length is about 3/10 of the height at the withers. Ample skin with wrinkles and folds of which the most typical and the best marked goes from the outer palpebral angle down to the lip angle. The upper longitudinal axes of the skull and the muzzle are parallel.

ELIMINATING FAULTS
:

Overshot mouth.
Accentuated convergence or divergence of the facial-cranial axes.
Topline of muzzle concave or convex or very aquiline (Roman nose).
Total depigmentation of nose.
Wall eye; total depigmentation of both rims of eyelids; cross eyed.
Absence of wrinkles, folds and dewlap.
Absence of tail whether congenital or artificial.
Extensive white patches; white markings on the head.

No ot ALL Neo's have that amount of wrinkle...only the GOOD ones, lol...so says their country of origin.

I don't know why I do this to myself, now I want that dog.  I have always wanted a mastiff, but my DH only wants one dog and he think the dog should be smaller than me.

That is one great looking Neo!!  That's how they should look.  It's a breed I have a lot of interest in, but they are much more "guardy" than OEM's and more aloof.  Not sure I'd want that as a family pet.  I just want to grab all his wrinkles and give him a big kiss!

The dog "Fang" in the Harry Potter movies is a Neo.  He has natural ears, but is much more wrinkly than any OEM I've ever seen and is the blue coloring.
