Hi..Are both of my dogs Pitbulls?

Hi..Are both of my dogs Pitbulls?

We have had Buster, the big black and white dog in the picture, since he was 3 months old..rescued from the pound. They had on the cage that he is a Pitbull, but there was no real info on him as he was abandoned as a tiny pup. He is 4 years old now.We recently adopted Molly..the dark brown dog in the pic. She was found in a school yard and very skinny...appeares to have been abandoned. The vet says she is a pitbull mix and she definately looks like one to me...she is about a year old. I am questioning what mix Buster might actually be because his body type is so different from Molly's. He is much longer, with a longer head and snout..and longer shaped torso...Their coats are very different different too.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Janet

They both look like pit bull mixes to me, especially Molly. She is a lil cutie and she looks like my sister's pit/lab mix Diesel, even though he is overweight and a old man, he used tolook like Molly when he was younger....

Buster looks to be pit/shepherd or something along those lines, border collie?

If I only had a mix of two breeds to guess with, I would say Buster is a Pitbull/Border Collie mix.  Of course, there is the possibility there are three or more different breeds in the mix.

In the third picture, I may would say it is possible Molly has some Shar-Pei in her, but I don't see it in any of the other pictures you posted of her.

I'd call them pit mixes, they're not all pit. Molly, to me looks to have more pit in her than Buster. I agree with Shelterdog, I see border collie in him, too. Kinda resembles my boy, in some ways.

    They're both great looking dogs!

Boxer mix for the taller dog. I wonder about the erect ears - let's see - I know! Pharoah hound! no, just kidding. Border collie might be the other piece. But I wonder how you can go from fully dropped to fully erect without some inbetween? Maybe he's only one quarter boxer and it's just really prepotent.

Hm, just curious, what makes you say Boxer?  I really don't see any Boxer in him (wouldn't the face be more smooshy?), but you seem to know a lot about genetics and I'd love to know where you're coming from!  I find genetics so interesting :)

I'd vote both Pit Xs, maybe with border collie (Buster) or lab (Molly).

Thanks bunches everyone...for your opinions and compliments. My hubby always said Buster looks like part Doberman. I never thought so...I always thought Pit and maybe BC. The face markings are so like a BC, but the hair is totally different. Guess he has Pitty hair. lol He really is an angel..they both are. I think he is really happy that Molly came to live with us. They play alot outside..lots of chasing.. and I think he really needed that.

Let's see, sometimes it's hard to break down an impression.

Something about the way he's standing in one picture. He's got sort of a goofy look on his face too that makes me think Boxer. They tend to sort of stand on tiptoe, with tail flagged.

His body type, with allowances for moderation (say if BC were in the mix - BCs tend to push more extreme breeds strongly in the direction of moderation because BCs carry so many recessives).

    Size of course.

The short neck and how high it is set on the withers.

Tail. I've seen a few uncut boxers and that tail set is why boxer fans prefer the tails cut! Always up and whipping around, it's a deadly weapon!

Finally, a long time ago a rescuer in Ohio did a lecture on various border collie mixes and how to deal with them (at the time rescue was so slow we could take in mixes, hard to remember those times!). She had a pic of a boxer mix and I remember how surprised I was at the moderation in the head and body.

You know border collies come in smooth (short) coats.[:)]

Lillysmommy, does your BC have a short coat? I would love to see a bigger picture if you could post one please!
Brookcove...thats funny what you said about the tail being a deadly weapon! Just yesterday Buster almost knocked over the Christmas tree with his tail! He is always whipping it!
Do you think he has any Pitbull in him then? You mentioned maybe Boxer/BC mix...I havent been able to find any pictures on line of a boxer/bc mix...I have seen some pictures of  Pitbull/BC mixes, and some of them do look alot like Buster in the face and eyes, but the body types are still different...mostly the necks and ears look different.
    Thanks again..

Janet-my dog is a mix, so he's not a good example (more pics here: [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=203092]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=203092[/link] ). His coat is actually a lot shorter/sleeker than most smooth border collies. There is a big variety in border collies, though, and some smooths are "smoother" than others, know what I mean?

But I think if you mixed a smooth border collie (or a rough that carried the smooth gene?) with another short haired dog, you could end up with a coat similar to Buster's (or my Jack's). I'm no expert, though. Becca would know more.

I will try to find some links to show you smooth border collies, for your viewing pleasure! [:)] (Unless Becca or dogslyfe gets around to it first...in fact, dogslyfe has a gorgeous smooth bc puppy to show off!).

Thanks for the link to your thread! Your dog is gorgeous..and he really looks alot like my Buster...their faces and tails are very similar...and the look of your dog's coat looks just like Buster's. The only real difference I see is the ears..and your sweetie has a leaner body and longer neck.
I had the first picture of your dog..the close up of the face, on my screen and my son thought It was Buster. lol Buster has those same black markings on his snout that your dog has! I'll have to take a shot of him straight on and put them side by side!
    Thanks again!
