    how come bernese...

    are never talked about.?

Same reason Entlebuchers are not talked about. There are not that many of them out there in the world.

Berners are great dogs. We thought long and hard aabout getting one before we found Guinness.

I agree, they are beautiful dogs who are probably wonderful in their own rights, but I just don't know of many people who have them.  I've always liked their looks, of course I'm a sucker for herding dog types!

I hope to have one later in life when I have a house and enough property to give the dog the proper amount of exercise. I've liked the breed since I was young and I've met a few, every one of them was unbelievably friendly without being annoying (no jumping or barking, etc).

I absolutely adore the look of a Berner. But I have heard that they are incredibly short lived?

    Is this a myth?

I think that is true, unfortunately for the BMD lovers.

There are cancer problems with the breed, and right now I believe 6 to 8 years is the average lifespan.
Many larger breeds don't live as long as smaller breeds, but the reason for the short lifespan of the Bernese Mountain Dog is the cancer problems with many of the dogs that are bred.

In the midwest, I have been running into an increasing number of Berners and they have always had a fairly solid presence on the east coast.   They really don't do very well in extremely warm environments, which is probably why you don't see many down south or in the southwest.

There are quite a few where I live. They are so beautiful!! We were more interested in the Entlebucher though, and almost got one. But deep inside I really wanted to rescue a dog. I may still get an entle one day....

Berners are incrediable!  Unfortunately I haven't known many who owned them.  I groomed a couple of them in my time spent as a groomer, and they are absolutely gorgeous wonderful dogs.  So pretty!

My cousins were a Berner family for a while.  First they had Logan and then when he passed they got Handsome...both were absolutely wonderful dogs and excellent with the kids.  Logan used to pull us around in a red wagon when we were just toddlers...I think we have pictures of it somewhere.  I don't remember him too well, but I remember Handsome.  He was extremely friendly, never obnoxious or annoying in any way, and just a delight to be around.  Unfortunately he died fairly young (7 or 8 I think?), and they haven't gotten another one since.  But I know if they do get a dog, it will be another Berner. [:)

I've also seen quite a few of them around, especially when I worked at the vet office.  They're certainly not as popular as something like a Shepherd or a Lab, but I do know of a few local ones.

I guess I will use this thread to ask one of my own questions about the Bernese Mountain Dog. Why do they have such short lifespans?

cancer seems to be a prevelant problem with this breed, which is one of the major causes of early death.  there are also some autoimmune issues with the breed as well.

I guess they just aren't as common.  Or maybe none of the Bernese owners have any questions to ask about their breed.  Cairn Terriers are like, never talked about, either![&:]  I suppose no one owns a Cairn just like no one seems to own a Bernese.

Try going to [linkhttp://dogbreedinfo.com/bernesemountain.htm]this site.[/link]  Aren't they huge, beautiful dogs?  My sister's friend owns a young male named Beau (Bo?).
