    Boxers =D

So, my friend has a Boxer named Taz (short for Tazmanian Devil [:D]). He's not a show Boxer and is almost completely white...a total goof and not the brightest but definitely a loveable sap! His muscles and his coat...I love them, I can't stop looking at them. I've never seen a dog with such a composition.
Anyways, my friend says that it's not just  Taz who is "not the brightest". He says that all Boxers are a little on the dopey, slow side. Really?? Is this true?? I've always heard they were intelligent, alert dogs.
Some of you on here may know I want to breed in the future, on the side from what my other job is. Not to earn money...simply because I find it fascinating and I want to better whatever breed I chose. Anyhow, I really am seriously considering the Boxer. I'm fairly new to the breed, so besides my question above, I have a few more =). Hopefully there's a few Boxer people here [:D].
-What do Boxers specialize in, in terms of showing? Conformation, perhaps?
-The above question about intelligence...I'm just curious. I do realize they are clowns and quite silly sometimes, but would one be so bold as to say, like my friend, that they are not bright and very slow at learning?? [&:]
-Cropping, docking? This is necessary for this breed if you were going to show/breed them professionally, right? Mmmm...I'm always torn on this subject Crying.
*Sigh* I had a few more questions in mind but they aren't coming to me now. Well, any other general tips?
    Thanks a bundle!!! [:D]

Boxers are very and intelligent dogs... they can be very stubborn, goofy, and silly at times, but thats just part of their charm :)

Ears do not have to be cropped to show, but the tail does need to be docked (at least for the AKC).. here is the breed standard [linkhttp://www.akc.org/breeds/boxer/index.cfm]http://www.akc.org/breeds/boxer/index.cfm[/link]

here are a few sites to help you learn more about the breed:

Thanks very much =) Danegirl. I have to ask, what do you think about tail docking? I'm very relieved that ear cropping is not necessary as long as the ear falls properly. But tail docking...[&:] it's necessary, and I can see for hygiene and perhaps injury reasons why it might be alright...but ahhh what are your thoughts?

i personally do not have a problem with it, as long as its done by a professional...

here is a quote from another site:

"The CDB claim that docking cannot be described as a mutilation. This emotive term is completely without foundation and is used by singularly ill-informed sources.
Pain is not an issue, as agreed by Mr J. Walsby MRCVS, Past President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
When docking is carried out proficiently on whelps aged 2-7 days, there is a minimal amount of momentary discomfort and the puppies can immediately resume sucking on the dam with no sign of distress to either dam or whelp."
Prof. Dr. R. Fritsch explains [linkhttp://www.netpets.com/dogs/healthspa/fritsch.html]why tail docking in very young pups is not painful[/link]

Well my guy is sometimes not so smart but at times but very obedient. He listens well until he hangs with the Bassett hounds too much.
Anyways Boxers do have a lot of energy, Rocky is 8 and is doing very well.
I caught him sitting on the couch then sleeping so cute.

Aww what a sweet face ^_^. I love how he sits on the couch like that!

It is VERY important with any dog, but ESPECIALLY with a boxer, that if you breed, you do it RIGHT.

I don't know anything about breeding because I'll never do it, but I DO know that boxers have not the best medical history and can tend to run into some very serious and life threatening conditions.
Cancer being the HUGEST of those conditions.
Often, too, they can run into spinal problems. These possible health issues is what kept me from getting a boxer, originally.

[sm=sad.gif] Yes, I agree it  has to be done right and with consideration about certain issues, especially health. I'm a long way off breeding, but I  was  really concerned about all the health problems Boxers face so I talked to my vet about it. He explained some of it with me and gave me some useful information about it, so I'm very thankful for that. It still won't keep me from this breed though [:D] I'm insane over these guys.

Well now you guys know Im gonna be a little partial here[sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]Wev'e had four Boxers in all, wev'e had them for over fourteen years. We still have two now. I don't know if I could have any other kind of dog. Don't get me wrong, we love all animals, but theese guys have stolen our hearts. Boxers are like little people, they understand everything you say, if you go hiking, they go, if you relax on the couch, their righth next to you, they just wanna be with you, that's it. They are NOT outside dogs, not ever! They will not tolerate this. They are inside dogs only. As far as ears, uncropped for showing is becoming more and more acceptable, tails I know are done when thy are a day old or so. As far as showing, weve never gotten into any of that, nor the breeding, we leave that to two wonderful breeders weve had all theese years, they are health tested and just breed occasionally and only to better the standard. The boxer is the clown of the canine world, please don't misunderstand this and think they are dumb, they are very very intelligent[:D] Dylan saved our lives from a fire in our house and another time also. They are just the best, I can't say enough good about them!!

I love boxers and have always wanted one.  But I have heard that they are notorious shedders and that no matter how often you brush them, their hair is everywhere (clothes, furniture, etc).  Is that the case?
    • Gold Top Dog
Well, we have always found that with agood quality food, a good brushing every week or so, I wouldn't give it a thought, maybe were used to it[&:] we always figured ours never got their winter coats because they have never been outside for any period of time to "get" a winter coat, in the summer they do shed a bit more than usual, doesn't stop us though!!!!

I've had 6 Boxers in my training classes over the past couple years, and they are wonderful, friendly, intelligent, playful dogs[:D] At first it was odd seeing them with natural ears, but now I prefer the natural ears for Boxers. Evidently Boxer owners in my classes brush theirs thoroughly because I've never had a shedding problem with them. Mind you, Labs and herding dogs leave behind tons of fur on my carpeted mats*lol*
