What breed would you like to have?

    • Puppy
There are many breeds I would like to own, but no matter what I get I will always have a poodle. I have had all three sizes. I have an oversized mini now, he is 17 inches. I also have a powderpuff chinese crested.  If I ever get a large dog again it will be a Dobie. I had one for 14 years and she was great. I am also getting very fond of Chihuahuas, we have several that come into the grooming shop and they are all so cute. I also love Pomerians and Papillions. As you can tell I am going for the small breeds, that is because I am not a spring chicken anymore and smaller is easier for me. I will be 61 in March.

Wow there are lots of breeds I would love to own, but I know for sure one day I will own a bedlington terrier. They just seem like the perfect dog for me lazy in the house like most sighthounds, but still have some terrier attitude! Also they shed very little like a poodle and also they're beautiful outline like a sighthound!(it's the dog in my avavtar)Other breeds I would want but probably wouldn't fit me are:saluki(IMO the most beautiful breed of dog ever!)a ibizan, a pharaoh, a irish terrier,a borzoi, an azawakh(second to the most beautiful dog but they are quite rare) last but not least a porcelaine which is a beautiful french scenthound but is extrmeely rare I could barely find anyhting about them on the internet. oh yeah i also think my first own dog will be a rescue, I also am in love with our current australian shepherd sophie aka dobie grrrl[:)]

I'll second you on the azawakhs and the ibizans-be careful where you get your azawakh from, if you get one-they are very primitive and some have serious dog and human aggressive tendencies (with strangers) because the ones in this country have been allowed to leave North Africa for that reason.

I think my next dog will be a rescue greyhound or spanish galgo-or possibly a scottish DH.   I would love a Saluki, but most probably my ego is too easily bruised to have one.  And no matter what, I'll always have at least one Pharaoh Hound in my life.  They are too precious as a breed to me for me not to have one, or two or four.

I already have most of the breeds on my "must have" list...I love american bulldogs and I have a mix, I love Akitas and have one, and I've always loved Pitties and now I have a pit mix....so I'm pretty happy. [:)]

But, my #1 "if I could have any breed I wanted" dog is a Cane Corso. I'll probably never end up with one since there aren't many in rescue...and I prefer for my dogs to be rescues. But, if I ever decided to get a dog from a breeder, it would probably be a cane corso.

    Other than that, I'd like:

    Olde English Bulldog
    Great Dane
    Bull Terrier
    Bullmastiff
    Neapolitan Mastiff
    Malamute
    Dogue De Bordeux
    GSD
    St. Bernard
    Presa Canario
    Dogo Argentino

I love anything big and mastiffy. [:D]

Really, I had read that they make good watchdogs but overly aggressive? So they were let out of N.Africa because they had unstable temperments or are you saying that they just all are like that. You're addicted to pharaohs admit it! just sign up for rehab and you'll be all better[;)][:)]

The way it works whenever anyone tries to export native dogs to another country is that the owners of those dogs will generally sell stock that they find fault with.  With the Azawakhs the dogs that were imported to this country had a less than desireable temperment.  Part of their job while with the nomadic peoples was to be an alarm, some of the dogs were more eager to be confrontational.  Most of the Azawakhs were not and are not the greatest in multiple dog households-they have strong ideas about territory-and since they are dogs that are born to run their territory needs to be pretty big.

There are a few breeders in the US that are breeding specifically for temperment-to make the breed more suitable as companion animals.  ( I personally hate the word "Pet.")   So when and if you look for a breeder, please ask alot of questions and meet the parents and the breeders other dogs.

I personally think that they are stunning animals.

Ok, I'm 23 now.  I hope I will have enough time in my life to own:

Rottweiler - currently have a faux Rottie [;)]
Dutch Shepherd - currently have a miniature Dutch Shepherd [:D]
    Malinois
    Groenendael
    Border Collie
    Australian Shepherd
    Great Dane
    English Mastiff
    Cane Corso
    Maybe something tiny

However, since I'm so obsessed with rescue, I'll probably continue to own mutts, unless I go through breed rescue.

Wow, this is a fun thread! I love hearing about everyone's different tastes in dogs! [:D]

My Aussie (who I desperately wanted) keeps me too busy right now to handle another dog, but later in life, I'd love to have a Great Pyrenees & a Newfoundland. Someday, if I end up with a houseful of rowdy kids, a Boxer or another Lab would be pretty ideal too. Of course, other Aussie owners keep telling me once I have an Aussie, it's impossible to love another breed as much--I guess we'll find out!

Hmmmm.... my list would be (assuming I win the lottery, too)

    French Bulldog
    Pug
    Catahoula (purebred)
    Grayhound

I've been watching rescues for all of these breeds, but DH isn't too cool about getting another dog, even after our Dal is gone. Oh well, he wasn't too interested in getting Lucy either, and now she's the apple of his eye!

ahhhhhhhhh... if I was picking on looks and not compatability with my lifestyle (admit it, you want some dogs that completely wouldn't work for you):

    Ibizan Hound
    Beauceron
Shiba Inu (this might get converted to the reality list, it's just the lack of off-leash control that bothers me)
    Pharoah Hound

And the reality list of dogs I may actually own someday:

    Dutch Shepherd
    Rodesian Ridgeback
    Shikoku
    Mutts!

I have a real soft spot for the japanese spitz type dogs. DH really doesn't like them, he says he doesn't like how their tails curl up so their bum is always showing. [8|]

I think if I don't get a second chow I will look into the rough collie or samoyed.

I would love to have multiple Irish wolfhounds, although their need for human interaction is pretty high, and you wouldn't want to have too many of them and short change them on socialization, but it would be great to have the room for 2 or 3 of my faves, and then I could foster for rescue groups like the borzoi, Irish wolfhound, Scottish deerhound.  I have reached a point, were there are days when our German Shepherd looks like a small dog.

I have a Sheltie X and an English Shepherd now. I guess in the future I would want:

    - papillon
    - pomeranian
    - toy poodle
    - mini dauchsund
    - another shelter dog = rescues are the best![:)]
