What's in the mix?

    What's in the mix?

Hello! Some of you may already know us, but I see a lot of new faces here, so I thought I'd get some fresh opinions on my boy, Jack.

The rescue said he's a border collie/lab mix. I've heard some other ideas, though.

He's almost 2 years old, a lean 50 lbs, about 23-24 inches tall at the withers. He's very high energy, loves to play with his sister, is reactive to most other dogs, very smart (catches on to things quickly), and his biggest passion is life is frisbee.

Here's some pics. I hope they're not too big.

So, what do you think is in the mix?

Another, looking pretty border collieish here:

Last one, I promise! Thanks for looking. :)

    What a gorgeous dog!
I definitely see the border collie, but I think maybe he has some sort of sighthound in him too? Maybe greyhound/whippet? The reason why I think this is because of his ears, thinnish muzzle, long skinny legs, and tummy tuck.

But then again, in the second-to-last pic his face looks kinda staffy/pit.

So I don't know- but he's beautiful anyway!

He looks a little pit-ish to me! Especially in that last movement shot, his expression just screams it to me.

As far as the Lab/BC guess, I think his hair is too short to be only those things (although entirely possible that they're both in there!).

    Gorgeous boy, by the way!

He looks like a Border Collie/Pit Bull/Sighthound of some sort mix to me. He's a beautiful dog.

It's very easy to forget that BCs also come in smooth coat. I see almost all BC there, just that face and eyes says it all. That side view of his face has that BC look. He would be on the larger side of BCs so I might also guess if there is anything mixed in there it would be some sort of hound.

I don's at all see lab, most pet quality (and in the show lines also) are more bulky and don't have the tummy tuck. Their ears are also set a bit lower on a rounder head on a lab.

If I had to guess two breeds, it might be short haired BC/Pit.  Only because it's often more common for those breeds to remain unspayed/unneutered.  Shelters call everything with Pit in it a "Lab mix" because they fear the general public will not want a Pittie mix.

Here's a new thought - coon hound? I have a friend with a coonhound mix and the body and head are exactly right. This is a known mix - an oops litter between a hunt trial champion coonhound and a working Border collie (Me: "I think she looks pregnant." Owner: "Nah, she's just fat from no hunting. I only have the one intact dog and he's never out of my sight" - two weeks later . . .a giant singleton was born)

I've got pictures. I'll post them later because we are trying to find a home for him. He's a NICE dog. If he had even followed the cattle a little she would have kept him but he takes more after the coonhound side of him. As it is we'll have to tear him out of her hubby's hands - he loves him but really, really, really doesn't have time, though he tries to make time. This dog deserves more than being put up all day and a few minutes of play at night. He's a half brother of my Rocky pup, about two months older.

Don't forget there's sighthound heritage in BCs that gives some individuals the body type. And the ears are typical BC ears. Smooth coats in particular tend to be strikingly whippet-looking. But you knew that. [:D]

I see a lot of bc in him, but I do think there's something else in there too.  I can't see lab or pit at all, but I could definitely see hound of some sort.  He's a pretty boy anyways!

Pit x BC definitely. Those cheekbones and eye set are all Pit IMO.

Thanks, everyone, for your input! I realize I'll never be sure what he is (other than a good boy), but it's fun to see what people think.

Most people unfamiliar with smooth border collies think he's all or mostly pit bull. Most people more familiar with bcs agree that he's at least a bc mix. I don't see lab, just as you guys didn't. I could go with pit or hound. I've always thought he could have pointer in there somewhere, too.

And yes, Becca, I do know all about whippety looking smooths![:D] (I'm a big fan...) Oh, and I'd love to see pictures of the coonhound mix that you mentioned, please.

I *do* think he's got a good lumping of BC in him. Between his looks and the things you tell me about him, I think its safe to say so. As to the what else, I would suggest something bullyish or houndish - but then again I'm terrible at this game. ;)

Becca, I'd love to see a pic too!

I see BC, but the body shape and those ears look whippit or greyhound, too.  I don't really see Lab, though.  I see some hound in that face, too though.
