pest control including fire ants needs to be addressed. Make sure you do heartworm prevention. I really like a website called Holly's Den to get information before you are able to enroll in a puppy kindergarten. GSPs are VERY high energy dogs. You need to develop lots of play type games to play (but not chase the dog, it is too much fun and can interfere with recalls). The two hose (toy) game from ScH is great. Get two equal/same toys. Use them only for this game and no other time. Slowly start tossing one toy a short distance (2 feet or less). When the puppy has the first toy in its possession, use your voice, beating the toy on the ground, shaking and dragging the toy, to switch the puppy's focus to the toy in your hand. When the puppy comes toward you, toss that toy in the opposite direction about the same distance. Repeat about four or five times and stop with the puppy is really revved. Then put it away. You are building interest and drive for the toys and retrieving at the moment. Over time you will have a dog who will charge after the toy, whip around and run back for the second toy, and if you have done it well, dropping that toy at your feet.
Do not do extensive road work (more than a mile of a steady trot; even that will be pressing it for a younger puppy) until 2 years of age when the growth plates close. The running around, chasing toys, etc will be better than the straight line, trotting associated with road work.
Depending on the age of the stepson, have him do the training with supervision or modeling so it is done right. Hand feeding part of every meal is an excellent way to help build a bond. especially if the kid lives in mom's house and only comes to visit.
