Kelpie??

    Kelpie??

Okay, so, I've had Cherokee for 7 years. I've always called her a lab/chow mix. That's what she looks like to me. Then a couple weeks ago I see a picture of a dog (I think it was on here, but I'm not sure) that looks a lot like Cherokee but with *** ears. I find out it's an Australian Kelpie, but then forgot to look them up or anything. Yesterday I remembered, and I Googled pictures of kelpies, and alllll the pictures of solid black or brown kelpies I could find look SOO much like Cherokee it's unbelievable. The coat on them is exactly her coat. The face shape, body shape, pretty much everything is the same as her.

The only differences are ears and size. They have *** ears, Cherokee has floppy, I read somewhere that 20% of kelpies have floppy ears, but I can't find any pictures of them with floppy ears. And the size, they're supposed to weigh like 45 pounds max I believe, and females are supposed to be like 18-20 inches tall. Cherokee weighs 55 and she's 20.5 or 21 inches tall.

When I first read that they're a rare breed in the US, I thought, oh, there's no way she's kelpie, but then I found out they're only rare where there isn't anything to herd. Cherokee came from North Carolina.

This picture looks ridiculously like her. The face is a bit different, and the ears of course, but seriously, the body could so easily be Cherokee.

    Here's Cherokee:

And this picture looks just like her face..

So I guess my questions are 1) does the size and ear thing make it clear that she's not a kelpie? Or could she just be oversized with floppy ears? 2) rarity..are they rare even in country areas? Is she probably not a kelpie? Anyone have an opinion? Thanks.

    Chelsea,
I don't know that much about this breed but I found some websites you might want to take a look at:

I'm still so weirded out that after 7 years I find a breed that looks so much like her... And if she is one, being a herding dog makes so much sense. I'd never even really thought about it before, strangely. But we've always called her the "cat police", because she always feels the need to, well, police the cats. She's never ever even come close to attacking one of them, but if they're doing something she thinks they shouldn't be, she herds them to another part of the house.

It's so weird to me that I didn't know this breed existed (I'd heard of kelpies, but obviously I never saw one..). It's rather interesting to be learning about her possible breed again. I feel like I have a new dog. [;)]

    Chelsea~
I so happy that I could help you in your quest to find out if Cherokee
is really a kelpie and not a lab chow mix.

Wow, I see what you mean. I do believe there's some Kelpie in there - the interesting question is, show line or working line? The person I mentioned in my PM could tell you for sure and send you more pictures for comparison. I think she rescues Kelpies in Australia, so she's seen it all, not just the typey ones. I mentioned the crappy bred Kelpie we had here in rescue, with the two noses - she had a blocky head like that, too. I always sort of thought it was because she had some doubling up of skull structure, too, but now I wonder whether there's a local line of block headed Kelpies here (or Kelpie crosses).

A mix with Aussie would broaden out the skull, too. So would ACD - another popular breed to mix (heeler X is what they are called here). Might be a smidge of something else, too - but I suspect you are on the right track. I definitely don't think lab/chow with the body type.

Wow quite a resemblance!! I love finding dogs that look like Scout.

In any case, Kelpies are supposed to be arguably one of the best herders out there.
