    Rottweilers

What is it like owning a Rottweiler? What are they like as pets? What kind of owner do they do best with? Any information is appreciated; I am only interested in learning more about them.

They are a fun breed. But like any breed they have their down falls.
    I have owned Rottweilers since 1990 .
There are lots of great books out there on the breed, plus going to shows and meeting them is always a great place to start.

Shiloh is my first Rottie and I enjoy him. He's a nice sized dog who's great with children and other animals. I think the right kind of owner for a Rottweiler is one who can handle that size of a dog, is willing to properly train it and can deal with all the negative stereotypes surrounding the breed.

Rottweilers do have a lot of health problems that came about during the explosion of the rottie craze. Just like labs and other popular breeds, there was a high demand for them and not many were health tested before breeding. Many are hypothyroid, they have a difficult time controlling their metabolism; they need to be on thyroid meds for their whole life. Many also have hip and other joint problems due to poor breeding. To add to their health problems they are also feared by many who simply don#%92t understand the breed. They fall into the same category as the bully breeds. Finding a good rott from a good breeder is difficult but they are out there.

I guess the second one's tail should be cut, though.

I like that pic of the un-docked rottie, it's almost rare to see one like that.
    • Gold Top Dog
Not rare, lots of people are not docking and in some countries you can no longer dock.So it is getting quite common place to see Rottweilers with a tail.
The way it is going I'm betting no one will be croping or docking in 10 years.

The tail looks nice, why do they dock them??
    • Gold Top Dog
I don't know the why's of docking but most are done at only 3 days old. Many done by the breeders themself. True, in other countries they don't dock but for whatever reason in the US docking is prefered in this breed. Thats whay I say it's rare to see an un-docked rottie, I guess what I really mean is it's rare to see that in the USA.

I have mixed feeling on the issue and really would rather leave it up to thoes who know their breed more than I do to make that choice.

Rottweilers were originally docked because of a working dog tax. To avoid paying taxes on the dog, they would dock the dogs tail as "proof" that it's a working dog.

My family love rottweillers![:)]  I don't want to generalize too much because I think each dog is unique, but we LOVE them.
The ones we've had have just been so affectionate and would do anything to get some lovin!  They've been so intelligent and worked well for my parents because we could leave them in the backyard when we weren't home and have a "lap dog" when we're just chillin out at night.
We've always adopted from shelters and have been lucky not to have health issues.  My families current puppy is 12 years old and is still as lively as ever.
Like with any large dog good training, lots of exercise, and firm boundaries are a must.

My aunt bred them for the first ten years fo my life and they were always great, gentle, loving dogs. You'd be surprised at how well mannered they are compared to so called "family dogs" today. A bit of training because of their great size but at least its not because of their stubborness like a lot of bully breeds.
I think they are amazing and the health issue is one to note. However I'd say it is due to their weight as much as it is to the "poor breeding" so many people claim. I have seen less and less prro breeders with this breed lately. After the big rott xraize in the 80's I think they have done a great job cleansing the line

My uncle had a rottie for the longest time who was the best working dog I've ever seen.  He worked on a ranch with a lot of cattle, and she was a ranch hand, and a good one at that.  She was also really great with kids.  Yeah... I don't have too much to add except rotties are awesome dogs.  lol

I have a 2 year old rottie and she has been the most loyal dog I have ever had the privlege to be friends with.  (and she is only 2!!!)  they require a bunch of exersize and boundaries, but are worth every second of it, even when we run in the puring down rain, which is her favorite!  We also have a chocolate lad, both females, and they are best friends, the rottie is older by 5 months, but the lab is the dominent one, even though she is 25 lbs less in weight.  my rottie just loves myself and wife, her sister the lab, and being a lap dog.
If you are asking because you want to own one, just promise yourself you will be able to give the pup at least a solid hour every day (2-3 if you want the most loyal dog in your life)

If you want a true rottie find a breeder that you trust and that has imported his breeding stock from Germany. Look at the health certs. and the working titles on the dogs. The breeder will match you to a pup. A good rottie will require a firm assertive handler. IMHO they are similar in personality to a good working shepherd. They seem a little more laid back than GSD`s but don`t confuse that as being lack of drive.
