Question about coat color of our new baby shih tzu

Hi all... I'm new here as a poster but I am a long time lurker...  I have a question about our new shih tzu puppy.  We are picking him up to bring him home one week from today.  And we are so excited!  From what the breeder says, he is such a sweetie pie.  Smallest baby in the litter and his name is Nemo.

As you can see in the picture, his coat is a brindle color now.  It is so pretty.  He has already lightened up a great deal since he was born.  His webpage is:http://www.freewebs.com/daisybabies/nemoakastitch.htm   in case anyone wants to see him every week from birth on.  [:)]  I could only get one picture to upload.  There are many more pictures on the webpage but this one seems to show his overall color best.

What color do you think he may be as an adult?  I know its hard to know as he is so young yet.  But I figured many of you might have more experience with how shih tzu coat colors change as they grow.  We were wondering if he might be a light silvery/beige color?

We are just curious and actually can't wait to watch his color change as he grows.  Any ideas or opinions would be great!

    Thanks!

I couldn't find the page.  Could you post a photo here?

Oh dear.  Sorry about that.  I had the word "in" included at the end of the link and that is probably why you couldn't find the page.  I just edited to change that so you should be able to get to his page now.

I did also upload a pic.  I can see it, but maybe no one else can, lol.

I'm an Aussie person, so I don't know that much about Shih's coat color, but I should think the breeder could take a guess.

If it is a brindle pup, then brindle he will be at the end. It can lighten or darken...but the stripes will remain...areas of white will remain with the exception of small snips or facial blazes which may shrink to the point that they are not there or are barely noticeable.

In Akitas Brindle tends to get lighten with age meaning a "black" Akita can break with brindling up to 1-2 years of age. In general the lighter they start and more noticeable the striping is due to lighter base color....the lighter overall it will be as an adult. This is in a different breed tho, that being Akitas.

My younger Shih Tzu was born brindle colored, she is now gray and white.  The picture you show has a lot of black, so might stay dark.

    Thanks for the replies!

The breeder did tell me that Nemo would likely lighten up a bit... into a silvery or beige color perhaps.  But she wasn't sure.  I was just curious if anyone else had owned or seen a brindle pup and what color it had ended up being as an adult.

I think it could probably go either way... lighten, darken or stay the same.  It should be fun to watch him grow and change though.  Can't wait!

Hi I also have a brindle shih tzu the breeder told me he would turn into a silver color. I got him when he was 11 weeks. He is now 6 months. I was wondering the same thing you are if he is going to change color.  He has gotten lighter but he is still brindle see pics below. Do you have any recent pics of Nemo?

This is when he was 4 1/2 months after first haircut.
This is Chucky when he was about 3 months.

This is him now at 6 months after his hair grew back.

I think he looks lighter after a haircut. He is going for his second haircut the end of this month I'll post more pics then. I hope this helps, you can see color change by the pics he used to be very dark when he was born. He is only 6 months now so he's probably going to keep changing. I would love to see recent pics of Nemo. I think it's amazing how some shih tzus color change.

    Hello,

I have a Shih Tzu that is 9 years old.  When she was born she was jet black and is now salt and pepper.  It has been my experience that black puppies turn salt and pepper.

I'm fairly sure that pupper will fade with age. The color is not exactly brindle but a form of the agouti series where brindle "lives". It's a "wild" grey that starts with one color and is linked to a modifier which fades the hair color with age (probably useful in the wild where pups need to be dark in the den, then lighter colored as they get more mobile, to blend with natural daylight surroundings). Pyrs, beardies, and chinese cresteds have these genetics too, among many other breeds.

Particularly if the coloring is lighter underneath (tummy and tail, right before any white patches), this is a wild grey color and will be extremely variable throughout his life - it will be fun to watch!

Congrats on your new baby! Hopefully you aren't getting him at 6 weeks. I tried to click on the link but it said "page not found".

I looked and there's now a 6 and 7 week pic, so I'm guessing he's not gone home yet.

    Here's the right link:

Hey there... Nemo is 8 months old now and his color has changed a lot!  I think his coat will end up being a silvery/white by the time its done changing, but we'll see.  :-)  Our dogs look quite a bit alike actually... Here's some pics.  The first one is Christmas time... he was much darker... and the second one is from this past week.

Oh wow! Nemo has really changed from his first pic. He is soooooooooooo cute. On that last pic he looks so light. Yeah our dogs do look alike. My Chucky will be six months in 3 days.  I guess his color is going to keep changing. Nemo has such a beautiful color. One will never guess is the same dog as his first pic when he was just weeks old or even the same dog as the pic taken on x-mas. So cute, thanks for posting recent pics. It's so fun to see pics as they grow and their color changes.
