Cost of a Quality Pet?

    Cost of a Quality Pet?

I am in the process of finding a good Australian Shepherd breeder in Texas. I've found one that sounds good so far. She guarantees hips, eyes, and against genetic diseases. I'm not sure what a good deal pricewise is, though. She charges $800 for a pet quality female. For you experienced owners out there, is that too high, too low, or about right? I've asked for references and a copy of the contract to review, but I'd really like everyone else's opinion. What did you pay for your purebred dog?

I think $800 is reasonable. I'll be paying over $1000 for my next dog (a Belgian or a Toller). I don't know what Aussies normally cost, but I wouldn't think they'd be much different than other breeds.

Aussie are more common than my breed but in beardies a "good" pet quality puppy cost around $900 and show around $1200 or more.  If you think about the cost of the test, the breeder barley comes out even.  I say if you find a good breeder and you find them to be exactly what you#%92re looking for then that itself is priceless.  Pet quality or not it's always better to get a dog on a guarantee with both parents tested for everything that could possibly happen to this breed.

I got both of my female huskies for around $400 each almost two years ago.  I paid around $400 for Gizmo.  Our next husky i'm looking into will run around $600 to $700.with alot of show and raceing lines.

Depends. I know two breeders here in Texas with the things you listed who charge $400 and $600 for pups AFTER you get your spay/neuter deposit back. There are SO many Aussie breeders to choose from locally... I'd say that's on the high side- it's comparable to what I was quoted for a show/performance prospect female pup when I was considering Aussies in September. (Although I was willing to consider an older pup and didn't care much about color). So I would probably

Pwca, could you give me the names of those breeders you were talking about? I'd really appreciate the help!  :-)

My last to purebreds were free.  My Rott I got as a puppy from a friend of a friend who couldn't keep him( he has passed on) and my Shih Tzu who is two and I got him in March...another rescue type thing.

I'd say $800 is right in line with what I've heard.  Most pet quality dogs pricing starts at around $500 and goes upwards from there.

have you tried Calabria Aussies? Or are you talking about Gail? I know both of these folks and they're quite legit and reputable from what I've seen. Are you wanting a working line or show line? That might make a difference.

Well, RW gave you the one that I liked the best (althogh I don't actually know what they charge, but I have met them in the past and I liked them a LOT- them, I'd pay $800 to, as I've known them longer. :P)

I am not where I can get to my notebook with their contact info (yay wifi) but if you would drop me an email (trainsdogs@gmail.com) to remind me, I will get back to you with them tonight. :)

That price sounds about right to me. When I was looking for a quality pet English Springer Spaniel puppy about 6-7 years ago, they were about $1,000. My next puppy will be a Silken Windhound, and he will be $800-$1,200. Location also makes a big difference in cost, I'm in California where everything seems to be higher priced[sm=rolleyes.gif]

Maisie cost $300 dollars. This was only because she was out of a litter that was expected to be about 4 puppies smaller and she is pet quality. Otherwise she'd be $700-$800. So yes, $800 sounds about right.

westies aren't that rare of a breed any more, (though not as popular as aussies) and they can go any where from 500-1800 for pet quality depending on the breeder and the location, and between 900-2500 for show quality again depending on lines and location

    jmd16 are you serious?!!
About 10 years ago my mother used to breed and sometimes show, show quality Westies.  I know that was 10 years ago but I don't think she ever got more than $500 for a pup.

I'd just purchased my second Akita.  My first one passed about a year ago.  I only paid $50 for him but there were a lot of special circumstances.  Just out of curiosity what would a pet quality or a show quality Akita go for.  I have no intentions of showing Mako, he's actually going to be my helper because I am in a wheelchair.  I'd still like to know what an American Akita would go for though.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

As for my dogs...  Nikki was from a couple whose dogs had a litter  (byb) long time ago (yes, we've learned a lot since then, and I was just a kid) and she was $250.  Trey came from a show breeder and cost $500 as a pet quality pup.  After we got him neutered and through obedience class we got $100 back so he was about $400.  Beau was $1800 for a show quality papillon.  The cheapest pet quality papillon we could find from a breeder we deemed responsible was $1400.  Harry was $2400 but we're getting quite a bit back after he champs (or if he turns out not to be show quality, we have a contract of some sort) and goes through obedience, so he'll end up at $1900, which is just a little more than Beau.  You have to also remember that small dogs only have small litters so each puppy will probably cost more.  Aussies are fairly common and larger so I'd expect them to be a bit cheaper.

My next dog will most likely be a show quality papillon bitch which are pretty hard to come by as the breeders tend to keep many of them.  so I'm probably looking at at least 2400.  O.o
