    Saint Bernards

Are there any other Saint Bernard owners out there?  I own 2 male littermates, Brutus and Rufus.  Or, they actually own me.

Great picture of your pack.  That is great you can give 6 dogs a great home.  Most people can't.  Welcome.

^^^ Can't balme the dogs for the mistakes of breeders and/or owners.  Big dog means big responsibility.  Speaking of which, i was definetly pleased to see a saint bernard topic up here since its part of the reason i came looking for a message board.  I recently adopted my first saint bernard puppy, he's about 10 weeks old now, a purebred male named Griff.  Short-haired as you can tell already from the pics below (these are from 8weeks old so hes a bit bigger as im sure you can appreciate labcablady.)  I was drawn to Saints for their reputation as gentle giants who get along with everybody (which is certainly true of this little guy.)  I also am very interested in obedience training and the idea of a 170lb dog being able to listen and obey with 100% accuracy is just amazing to me, and working with him has already proven to be a pleasure (he's learning faster than i expected.)  Anyways, here are the pictures of Griff, aka the GriffDozer:
-Do you remember when yours was this small???

[align=left]He's gorgeous!  I actually grew up with Saints, but it will be awhile before I can get one of my own.  Since my small family is apartment bound until next summer, we're sticking to cats and birds for awhile.

They do grow fast, don't they?  When our Chelsea whelped nine, you could fit the pups in the palm of your hand.  Eight weeks later they're the size of small chihuahuas, and at 6 months they're almost lab sized.  Absolutely crazy, and such a blast!  Congratulations, TYGO, and welcome to both you and labcablady!

Thank you, he's doing great, nice to hear from an experienced saint owner (this is my first.)  He is a blast, so clumsy.  He's got a friend who is a retreiver of aout the same age and i just cant get over how agile the retreiver is compared to my saint.  I can't even get him to walk down the three steps from the kitchen to the front door yet! and just for comparison for any non-saint owners, here's a pic of him at about 10 weeks, 2 weeks since the last pictures i put up.

I don't own a Saint but I do own a Greater Swiss named River.  They beleive that Saints are decendants of the Greater Swiss.  I know that sometime when I look a River I can see the Saint likeness.  Swissies are short haired and they don't have flews so not drooling.[:D]

Your dogs are beatiful!!  I just don't think I could deal with drool.....[8|]  They say that if they shake and it gets on the walls it can be like glue to remove, is it true?

    Anyway,  BEAUTIFUL!!!!

For the pup, I would recommend inplementing the NILIF method of into your daily routine, just to help keep these big guys on the straight and narrow.  Mine is a big mush, but it took some time to train him.  Few..  it much better now.  Like a Saint he weighed 13 pounds at 8 weeks, and by 10 months he was over 100.  Now at two he is 150lbs and holding.....[&:]

I grew up with a male Saint as a kid and just fell in love with them.  We had a rescue shorthair male a few years back and he was the most wonderful dog.  A happy ending rescue story and he and Kato became fast best buds.  Never a problem, and they were a perfect match for their play games.  Sadly, he dies of mast cell cancer and I still miss Dudley!

I think Saints and OEM's are quite a bit alike in the personality dept.  Very similar temperaments and energy levels.  Afterall, Saints are really Alpine Mastiffs.  I'd love to get another one day as Kato really enjoyed his friend.  Good luck with your new pup!  They do grow sooooooo quickly and are tons of fun!

What is the NILF method?  Not sure i've heard of it, or heard it abbreviated whatever it is, i'm the owner of the pup so if you could give me some more detail (in this thread or in a PM) i would appreciate it.  I try and get as much info as i can on training methods.

It sooo easy that you can make it part of your daily routine with little effort.  I worked so beautifully for my gental giant inconjuction with his training.
