    My new mixed breed..any thoughts?

Hello everybody!  I recently adopted a new companion form a local shelter. He is absolutely wonderful!  He is about 2 years old and very friendly and affectionate.  We love him!  We were told he is an Aussie mix.  But, what do you think he is mixed with?  With that plume on his tail...my educated guess would be an Alaskan Malamute.  Any thoughts?  Thanks!

I just wanted to add that he is about 60 lbs., his outer fur is rough, and it looks like it may have been shaved for the summer.

I can't see his eyes very well but I'de almost guess he has some catlehola in him mixed with a northern breed.  That spitz type tale is almost a dead giveaway to something northern.  Whatever he is, he is a very nice looking dog, way to go on adopting!

Awwww...he's adorable.  I think your guess of a mix Alaska Malamute is a good guess. What about a Siberian Husky mix?

Because of his weight I'de lean more towards the Alaska Malamute over husky but with mixes it' still so hard to say.  I'de say catahola leopard dog because of thoes flopy ears and maybe the eyes

I agree, Aussie mixed with Alaskan Malamute.  By the picture (barely, but it's there) that the puppy has 2 different colored eyes. A definate trait of an Aussie.

By the way CUTE dog!  [:)]

60 lbs is awfully small for a Malamute X...  I would say something else spitz-ey.  There are plenty of other spitz types out there with curled tails that are much smaller than the Malamute.  If he did have Mal in him, I'd think he'd have to have a lot of other breeds to shrink him down...I think...  Aussie sounds like a good guess to me, mainly because of the coloring and placement/shape of the ears on the head.  The shape of the head is also quite similar to an Aussie.  The presence of Catahoula I think would depend more on the location of the dog mainly because Catahoulas are quite rare in certain areas and more common in southern areas like Louisiana (I think it's the state dog there).

Siberians can have two different color eyes, too.  My first thought was Aussie/Siberian mix.  At 60 pounds, he's on the high end of weight standard for a male Siberian.  In some ways, he reminds me of LisaK's Sky.

Both of his eyes are brown.  My husband and I origionally thought husky as well, but looking at the breed standards...it didn't say that they had coarse fur (and my dog does), plus they said their tail is curled strait over the body, not to either side (and my dog's tail curls).  Thats why I though maybe a malamute.

Your mileage may vary. The breed standard for Sibe (which of course, is for conformation, which was antithetical to husky breeding for most of its history) is about 60 lbs for male adult weight. In real life, the weight is a little more or less. I would echo that 60 lbs is underweight for a Mal. Dogs have done most of their growing by 2 years but you may have to wait until 3 years to determine adult weight. Ears aside, the shape of the head kinda looks Mal, but I'm still willing to bet on Aussie/Sibe, though I could be wrong.

I live in Central New York.  I have never even heard about that breed of dog (catahola), but, that doesn't mean they are not around here?!

BTW - I think he is around 60 lbs.  He has a vet appointemnt next week.  He is a touch smaller than my in-laws yellow lab (around the same height, but not as much bulk).

I'm going to buck the trend and say Aussie x Chow/Lab X. Reasoning:

Tail looks like quite a few undocked Aussie tails I've seen- the high tailset means it's likely to curl if left natural- not all Aussies aer natural bobs.
Minimal white markings make me suspect that one parent was solid colored (little-no white)
Build isn't quite like an Aussie- a bit wider in front and very steep rear angulation (common to chows) but bigger than most PB chows.
Smooth coat is dominant form a Lab or Lab X parent and would explain the size and all the other traits except for the build.
