    picking a breed?

i'm looking for a toy dog under 10 pounds that does not mind being alone for much of the day and is good for apartment life. does anyone have any suggestions? a chihuahua?

i have a chihuahua and he loves to be by your side and does well inside the house, just make sure you potty train him/her as soon as possible. we did not do that with my dog and he now still has potty problems. other then that, they are good dogs that can be content [ from my experiece of owning one] for a while without anyone around. like everyone has said the crate is the best while you are not there, a dog will usually never pee anywhere it sleeps and eats. i also had a shitzu and that breed is very sweet and is good for apartments as long as you get the crate.. haha it is allllll about the crate. i hope i have helped you and let me know how it goes finding one.

[:)]you should try a shih tzu! i have one 8 year old male and he is the perfect dog.  tzus dont (usually) chew or bark eccesively like chihuawas sometimes do.  we are out of town alot and he has no problem seperation anxiety.  they are loving, loyal, smart, and sooo cute.  i would recomend this breed to anyone.

I have a chihuahua also, and live in an apartment.  He's great.  While he was a puppy we never had to worry about crating him because someone was always home, then we moved when he was 7 months old and he has free roam of the living room in this apartment.  he never chews on anything (he has plenty of toys all over), he hasn't had any accidents in this apartment (i think it has to do with the fact that there were no smells...i'd consider shampooing the carpet once your dog is potty trained if you're going to let it have free roam of the apt so there aren't the pee smells).
and he's small enough that he cant' get the stuff we have on top of the coffee table.  he usually just sleeps all day long while we're gone.
