I have 2 Boston Terriers. What did you want to know?
    • Bronze
Not my original question but if you could be so kind to answer a few questions.

We are looking to get a dog that stays inside.  We have a 4 year old who has been around dogs.  One thing I am worried about is 3 days a week no one will be home, am close enough to go home for lunch.  I've researched until the info is starting to run together.  I've come up with Boston Terrier, Aussie Bulldog, and Bullnese, that sound like they would work best in our situation.  Shih Tzu and Bichons sound good as well.

Your experience with the temperament of BTs around kids?
    How easily house trained?
When let outside do they want to run away (had a minpin that did this)?
Lap dog or just close by?

I'm sure there are more questions and feel free to offer up any advice that may help.  Thanks a bunch, so glad I found this forum.

BT's are great with children provided that the children know how to behave around the dog and both children and dog are properly supervised.

When let outside do they want to run away (had a minpin that did this)?

I personally do not let my dogs off leash. I would think that a BT could be trained to be off leash but this is something that they have to be trained and constantly reinforced to do.

Lap dog or just close by?

Both. My two are always following me around and they're on me like white on rice.

What is your opinion about leaving them at home those 3 days a week.  Like I said will be able to go home at lunch as long as needed.

Grew up on farm where the dogs ran free, lived in the barn, this is new with finding the right dog for the house and family.  Your info is a great help.[:D]

Elaborate on the 3 days alone. Do you mean that you work 3 days a week and can let the dog out on your lunch break and when you get home from work or that you will be away from home 3 days a week and besides the lunch break, the dog will be totally alone?

If it's the former, BT's do fine while their owners are at work. If it's the latter, I wouldn't recommend that unless you have someone coming over more than once to let the dog out and to check on it.

Not three days in succession.  Both the wife and I work all day MWF, and one of us is off Tues. and Thursdays.

How do you find a reputable breeder?  We are not in a high metropolitan area where the choices will be great (central Arkansas).  Certain questions to ask on the phone, what to look for once I get there?  Went to a pet store at lunch just to look.  They know how to throw the puppy in your arms and get you hooked:)

Absolutely do not get one from a pet store! Since you live in the Midwest, there are quite a few reputable breeders around here. The best place to check out is the [linkhttp://www.bostonterrierclubofamerica.org]Boston Terrier Club of America[/link] website. Check out the links on there and if you want breeder referrals there's a link on there that has Billie Bunch's email address. She's the breeder referral person and she's usually quick to get back to you with a list of breeders.

If you want to check out some websites on what to look for in a breeder, check out my friend Kims [linkhttp://widgetbostons.com/PBG.htm]BT puppy buyers guide[/link] and you can check out [linkhttp://www.SekcsZoo.com/Puppy.html]mine[/link].
