The Shih-Tzu is an alert and spunky little dog. Happy and hardy, endowed with loads of character. They are royally dignified, courageous and sometimes arrogant. This breed does well with polite, careful children. The gentle loyal Shih-Tzu makes friends easily and although obstinate can respond well to consistent patient training. A very alert watch dog, the Shih-Tzu likes to bark, but is usually quiet inside the house. They are stubborn and clever. Shihs can get snappish if they are surprised or peeved. Playful and lively, this affectionate little dog needs to be with people and are generally good with other pets. Some can be difficult to housebreak.

I have to say that for me the best toy breed worked out to be a pomeranian. Though I won't lie you have to work early on about the barking. Good luck in your search!

It really just depends on the dog and what training methouds you use. Lots of people get a toy breed and think that because it's so small it doen't require tha same amount of training as a large dog, NOT TRUE! The reason you hear that small dogs have yelping and behavoral problems is because most owners do not put the time and effort to train them. This can be true for any breed large or small. It is true that each breed of dog does have it's own unique behavors common to the breed, however, a dog still needs to be shown how to behave properly. Many owner also need to be show how to properly train a dog. A dog is not born knowing how to behave in a human's home and a human is not born knowing how to train a dog. So both owner and dog need to work together to make things work out.
