Beagle? anyone?

    Beagle? anyone?

I see here that not many ppl have beagles. Well, for those of you who do, here it is, the official beagle thread! LOL

Love beagles and lived with one for over 17 years-very high energy, dogs that don't take themselves or anything else to seriously, very good at thinking for themselves, and getting up to creative mishchief, strong as oxes pound for pound, and loyal and loving as the day is long.  Hope you have more luck with your official beagle area, than I have had getting in contact with the Irish wolfhound people out there.  Of course, IW are way down the AKC registry list, so I think you should probably get much more response, plus the little guys are just so darn cute.

I have a beagle named Carley.  I really think that this breed is perfect for me.  I love the slight training challenge.  And of course their Arooos!  lol.  Actually, I don't think she wants to be a beagle.  She acts like a cat (curls her feet under when she lays down, rubs up against you, and pounces) and points at birds!  I think my pointer had something to do with that though.  lol.

Just curious- anyone have a beagle that loves to play fetch?  I've heard that most of them won't, but Carley is obsessed about this game.

My mom's proof of how she acts when I'm not home:

    But I don't believe her:

Ok sorry about all the pics but I just figured out how to post them!  lol.

My husband and I just got our first beagle.  He had one his entire life and was thrilled when we got Charlie last month.  I don't have much experience with other breeds, but he is so loving and snuggly!  I never realized that I could love a dog so much!  He loves to play fetch with his big red bone!  I just love it when he greets me not only with his tail wagging but his whole rear wagging along too!

I currently have 4 Beagles. One adult bitch named Nonnie and 3 pups from my March 2006 litters, Bracket, Ellie & Sandy. I have 3 Tri's and one Red & White. Sandy the Red/Wht is Nonnie's daughter.

I show my Beagles in UKC and AKC events...tho we're phasing out AKC as we can this year. Recently the first Champion from our kennel was finished by his new owners...we were very proud of him! He was out of my R/W foundation bitch Susie who retired this year to a couch in a wonderful home nearby. Ellie & Bracket are Susie babies from her last litter.

I enjoy the breed very much and have had them for about 6 years now. They are a good fit for my household as I have small kids and cats.

I usually post plenty of pics in the photos section of my hounds [:)]

Congratulations on your first champion! Are your dogs 13 inch? They are adorable, I wish you all the best with them. Beagles are a great breed. I haven#%92t had one since I was a kid. How do you like UKC and their shows? Can#%92t say I blame you for phasing out AKC especially this year, but hopefully if enough people speak out and protect the ability to remain private and maintain dogs in homes AKC will turn around or be phased out by everyone, even me a long time AKC person.

    Colors, Thanks!

I have both sizes...and in between lol. My adult bitch Nonnie is a skosh over 13"...Susie was a 13" and threw all 13" pups to my knowledge, bred both times to 13" dogs....her daughter and son I have now are both going to stay under I think. The Ch was a 13" dog...and Sandy is definitely going to be a 15".

UKC shows are a lot of fun but it makes for a long day as there are usually only 2 judges...but it's relaxed and I can do less grooming lol! Beagle numbers are creeping up so GRCH's are possible in future which is exciting. The AKC recent stance on Paws and judges in multiple registries, both have made me wonder seriously about giving them any more of my money...we'll see how the year goes!

You are not alone, since 1935 when my grandmother showed dogs until today someone has always been raising and showing in my family. This year is the first year in all that time that no one is showing. AKC#%92s involvement with the PAWS bill is the reason for that, this is the first year I can honestly say that the AKC has done more to harm pure bred dogs than I ever would have imagined.

I had a 13" Beagle for almost 17 years.  (Love you, Miss Mako!! [sm=angel.gif])
She was funny, happy, and had a great sense of humor.  We still miss her.

Add me to the beagle gang......We have had our Daisy for almost 2 years and we love her to pieces.

    Love the girl to pieces..........[:D]
Shes on a diet so she is slowly losing weight.  Funny how I never really realized she was overweight.  She is 22 lbs now and she was 27.  The vet said under 25 would be good so we are still trying to lose a little more.

How much do your beagles weigh?
    • Gold Top Dog
Nonnie weighs 17-18lbs...she's a bit over 13" tall. My other bitch Susie was right at 18lbs and 13" (stockier build)
The heaviest Beagle I owned was an intact 15" male and he weighed about 23lbs at almost 2. Susie's son was about 16/17lbs at a bit over 18 months old. Susie weighed 23lbs just before delivering 5 pups lol.

Most 13"s should aim to try and stay in the 15-22lbs range....bigger hounds of course get heavier...and muscle weighs more than fat so a dog in hard hunting shape would probably weigh more. Build also factors in...

Many folks struggle with keeping their hounds from being obese...it's a constant battle against those brown eyes! Mine all get around 1 1/2-2c of dry food per day fed once a day...they do well and stay fit on that.

Glad to see there are other beagle owners in here! My Chelsey (10 month old female) is very active and demands a lot of attention. Sometimes she comes to me with a bone in her mouth and cries, until i follow her to the spot where she wants to be to chew on her bone. But i've started to make her stay where i am, or else, i'll have to follow her around all the time. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? LOL She likes to play fetch in the house only. At the park, she'll play a bit, but the minute there is a distraction (a new dog or a new smell) we lose her for the game and are stuck going all the way at the end of the park to retrieve her toy. She also wants to eat everything!! Such a little pig! But we just love her sooo much!! I still haven't figured out how to put up pics in here, it always says my pics are too large. ANyone could help me with that? Thanx!

rwbeagles...........your beagles all sound good with weight.  I just had no clue that she was too big.  She is a 15in. and Id like to see her smaller still.  She gets about 2 cups a day twice a day.  1 cup in the Am and 1 cup in the PM.  I was going to cut her down to just once a day the same amount BUT then we got Dixie and she eats three times a day and I didnt want Daisy feeling so left out at meal time so I just left her at two times a day.  I think Im going to cut her back to 1 1/2 cups a day though instead of 2 cups.  I think her having more activity lately has helped with the weight loss.  From playing with my parents dog and now Dixie shes more active.

Mine get fed once a day....1 1/2-2c. TOTAL. This was the amount recommended most often when I polled the breeders/owners on my Beagle list.

You might try replacing one of the meals with a bowl of green beans steamed in chicken broth. Helps them feel full without adding a lot of calories. The green bean diet has saved many a portly hound from themselves...lol!

My mom has a beagle and he plays fetch.  She's got him so he'll bring the ball, sit then lie down and give mom the ball to throw again.  He's a doll.

He also gets his food dish "a la Snoopy" and brings it into the living room when he's hungry.

    Lovely dog! :o)
