Thinking of getting an dog.

Well, I hadn't really heard either way, but my friend's was easily housebroken.
She's been a great dog, a little on the little side for my liking, but she doesn't bite the children, she plays with them and I NEVER hear her bark.
But that's just been her experience. I'm not sure about the breed in general. And I don't know much about smaller breed dogs.

hi--we have a shih tzu and he loves everybody; he rarely barks at all, except at the cat when he wants to go out; very smart and loving little dogs

Hmmm... Shippo only barks when he's playing, or if something has seriously alarmed him when we're outside and it's dark... I hope he doesn't grow out of being mostly quiet lol... of course I'm sure with continued training, I could probably have him stay like he is now... >o.o;< I hope.

Although before I got him I DID hear that corgis bark a whole lot... I was surprised when I got him...

My corgi isn't particularly barky either. When she was a pup she would yap a lot, especially when playing or trying to get my attention. Now she generally only barks when she's excited or thinks I should come and look at something. Oftentimes if she's worried she'll bark, but she'll stop if I come out and look around and convince her that I've checked it out and everything is okay. [:D] My housemates have had problems with her barking when I've been away, though. Without me to tell her everything is fine, I guess she wasn't content to leave it at that.

Check out your local shelter before buying a dog from a breeder.  If you do decide you absolutely want a purebred, there is a breed specific rescue for every AKC accepted breed.  You can search for someone who rescues the breed you want straight off the AKC website:  [linkhttp://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm]http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm[/link].  If you are looking for a breed that is not AKC accepted, this is a pretty good site:  [linkhttp://lairds.org/Kyler/old_Purdue/animal_rescue/breed_rescue_organizations]http://lairds.org/Kyler/old_Purdue/animal_rescue/breed_rescue_organizations[/link].
And, of course, there is [linkhttp://www.petfinder.com]www.petfinder.com[/link], where you can type in what your interested in (breed, size, etc.) and it will show you a list of available pets in shelters across the U.S.

Beagles don't bark either...they bay! Make sure you like that noise if you get one! I grew up with one. We loved him!

I grew  up with beagles, my MIL has one now, as does my neighbor and then I have a beagle/poodle mix.... don't ya just love to hear a beagle bay at the scent it's trailing?
(You guys should see Molly, the poogle, tracking the GSD through the house doing her best beagle bay... it's hilarious!)

I think one problem with wanting a dog who only "barks for a reason" is that the dog always thinks he's barking for a very important reason.[:D] It may not be our idea of important (cat on the fence, bird flying by, squirrel in a tree, dog walking by the house etc.) but the dog in question probably thinks it's worthy of being on the 10 p.m. news.

Bichon Frise!  They have the greatest personalities and are small and so cute!  In my experience, they have never been posessive and are not agressive.  They are good with kids and definitely VERY playful.  I just lost my little Bichon furbaby in March - she was almost 12 years old and had the personality of a puppy up until she got sick about a month before she passed.  Definitely look into this breed.  You will be hooked forever!!!

This is Niki - I miss her soooo much...
