    About Plott hounds

I understand that Plott hounds have received marginal recognition as a distinct breed from AKC-and was wondering what the status on that was and if anyone has any sources or further information about this breed.  They have been generally lumped in with coonhounds because of their hunting style, but they really aren't used for that...and I know that they originated in the Carolinas for treeing bear, but beyond that and knowing that they have the rep as the most cussed hound variety in terms of temperment, I don't know a great deal more.  I am defintely curious to hear from folks who are in the know....So much mythology builds up around breeds that are not AKC sanctioned, because I guess there isn't really a central clearing house for reputable information.

I don't really have much experience with the breed, but I did have the pleasure of meeting one last Summer.  Everything I've read on the breed says that have a very laid-back temperament.  Last time I checked, Plott Hounds were accepted in the Misc. class of the AKC, I don't think they've been accepted into the hound group yet, there's not enough people showing them.  Also, mythology builds up around almost any breed, AKC sanctioned or not.  Ever heard of the American Staffordshire Terrier?

I know that there's some good articles about the Plotthound online.  Google Plotthound and you'll see.

I had the great fortune to have a plott hound from the mountains of Kentucky for 12 years before cancer got a hold on him. He was the most dignified dog I have ever known. Rufus was my main man when my first husband died......he never let me think that I didn't have anyone to care for me....Rufus was one the greatest blessings of my life.
