English Labs / Square heads

As a further step towards educating myself, ...as there's a lot to learn no matter what you know now, ....I have posed this conundrum to another list that's mainly breeders and/or people that exhibit, do field work or both. I am hopeful that they can let me in on the inner workings of this breed as far as proper terminology. Thanks all for the opportunity to expand my horizons! [;)]

    I am still offended...

I paid $800 for my beautiful "English" style lab who comes from show lines as stated above. Labrador Retrievers are originally from Newfoundland.

There is no such thing as a "Golden" or "White" Labrador...only "Yellow Labs."

But it appears that I am too dumb to know anything about the dog that I own.

I'm probably totally wrong but I was always under the impression that we had regular labs and those Chesapeake Retrievers that have the nice square heads. hhhmmm, I just might have to look into that!

Actually Chessies don't have square heads, but longer muzzles and wedge shaped heads.

What are you getting so worked up about?  The difference between the breeds is not the country they came from, but what they were bred for.  English style just refers to the stocky bodied style, also called Bench or Show type, we've established that.  I'd make a longer reply, but I'm not sure which of your statements are sarcasm, so I'll not make an idiot out of myself trying to decide.  It looks like you know about your breed, but just because you own one doesn't make you an expert.  For some reason, this brings to my mind the story of the man with the red weimeraner.  Not sure if this is relevant, but not everyone that owns a purebred dog knows everything about their breed.  Again, you do look like you know about your breed, but you're getting really worked up over nothing.

Hi Guys,   I'm really sorry if I started a huge dispute on this board, since the original post was from me.  I didn't know there was a huge debate on what to call a square-headed Labrador  versus a narrow-headed Labrador.  I just thought that the square-headed type Labs were called English because this is my first Lab ever owned and when we got him that's what the breeder was calling them. Also, later I was reading in a Labrador book and the book also identified them as English. As far as Bench and Show I have no idea....I just thought English was square headed and American was narrow headed. Sorry, If I was wrong and for creating a heated topic. I didn't mean for this to turn ugly...I didn't even know there was a debate about it.

I would tend to agree with Gina, I have always refered to the square/stockier labs as "show" or "conformation" dogs and the lankier labs as "field" labs.  My other doggie friends also refer to them that way.  Either way, I think its just a way to differentiate between the two varieties.

According to every lab book I've ever read (I'm one of those dorks that reads up on breeds they don't even own) Gina is, in fact, correct.  I'm not at all sure what all the fuss is about.
