I think you may have just answered for me what breed these two dogs that we frequently see on our walks are. I was wondering if perhaps they were just odd looking labradoodles (though what is "odd" in a breed that doesn't have a standard? they're just not anything like the other labradoodles I've seen). But looking at the pictures that I just had to go look up because of your post, I think they might be curly coated retrievers. Rare breeds are not that unsual around where I live, which is a pretty well-to-do neighborhood that sits on the edge of the city's biggest and doggiest park (money + easy access to a park = expensive dogs). I see Ibizan hounds and Anatolian shepherds on a fairly regular basis, so it wouldn't surprise me if these guys were a rare breed like this one.

Interesting. I'll have to ask the guy next time. And then I'll ask, "Hey, why are both your splendid dogs so very very overweight?"  Or maybe I won't ask that second part.

I've only met one, so therefore I do not know if he was typical of his breed since admittedly I know very little about them.  He was a funky looking dog, and had a wonderful personality.  He was quite the ham actually :)  From what I understand of the breed, they are usually more reserved with people outside of their family....but he was quite the charactor, and not shy.

My neighbor's got a Curly Coated Retriever who I pet sat for once.  Her name is Ketcher and she's quite pretty...a gorgeous liver color with very expressive eyes.  She was extremely shy around me though and never once wagged her tail at me and kept her distance, but at the same time, she never barked or was unfriendly in any way, just wary.  They're interesting looking dogs, that's for sure [:)]

There is a woman at my kennel club that owns and breeds Curlies.  They are friendly, once they get to know you, but are aloof, and wary.  The dogs I know are named Luna and Micah...they're a lot bigger than you'd expect too!

Sweet dogs, but can be hard to find.

Yes, they seem very rare and rare breed often mean very high price puppy....i guess my only chance to have one will be the rescue way.

the_gopher  Do you have a flat-coated??? If so.. how it is to live with a flatcoat?? Only heard good things about them.

The only curly coated retriever that I have seen in person was at a dog show, and it was trying to attack other dogs as they walked by its crate.  Hopefully that is not typical of the breed-lol.

I find that [linkhttp://dogbreedinfo.com/curlycoatedretriever.htm]this site[/link] is a nice resource of info on hundreds of different dog breeds, even the hybrids.  You could also try going to [linkhttp://www.ccrca.org/]the Curly-coated Retriever Club of America.[/link]

Easily in my top 5 breeds!  Curlies are awesome dogs and the ones i've met at shows have been reserved but you could see how unreserved they are with their own people :)

I've only met one curly so far.  He was boarding at out shelter through the rescue group.  It might be from meeting so many new people in so short a time, but he was incredibly friendly with anyone that came in.  Incredibly smart dog too.  I started working with him because he was insane on leash and he picked everything up faster than you would believe.  It could very well have been that he already knew the stuff and was just trying to take advantage of the push over volunteers, but it was pretty cool how quickly he started paying attention once he realized that he wasn't going to be able to drag me around.

Don't confuse that for bad temperament.  When a show dog is owned or shown by a big time breeder/handler, the dog is often on the road more than it is at home, and thus, his crate becomes his space.  They become territorial over it.  "STAY AWAY!!! MINE!"

Curlies do it, Goldens do it, Labs do it, Maltese and Shih Tzu's do it, Chihuahuas, Pugs, and GSD's do it.  There are dogs in every breed that behave that way, and it is not always because of dog aggression or poor temperament...it's just their space.  My Old Man is that way about his crate space and his truck.  I don't take issue with it...it's his space.  Others shouldn't bother him.

Curlies are my "dream breed" also! I did alot of research to see if i could import one here (not practical...they have to be over 9 months old...a few puppies avaialable, almost no older ones though [:(]) There seemed to be regualr ones for rescue, i eventually found a CCR forum which the members would message about rescues needing homes....

They seem like an awesome and unique breed, and with some effort you should be able to find an adult in need of a home. but bear in mind they are prone to diseases, like many other breeds.

    LUCKY!
