Cost of a Quality Pet?

Our Russells go anywhere from $400-$1500.  Pets are usually around $400.  Show is usually around $800, but depending on the dog can go up to $1500.  It really depends on the dog, and the contract that is formed.  I got a deal with Rose and Colton though!  Rose only cost me the $15 title transfer fee, and Colton nothing.  Although, I am not listed as owner on Colton's papers, but I really am.  My mentor kept the breeding rights for both of them.  Although, if I want to keep any of Rose's puppies, then I can with no charge.  He takes care of all of the care and testing though.  I just bring her food out there.  He would give her the food he has, but I wanted to keep her on the same thing.  Anyway, I would say that $800 is reasonable.

An update-- I found a puppy!!! By pure luck, I managed to find a breeder pretty close to home. The breeder has their hips & eyes checked, but was only asking $400 for a pet quality dog. A pretty good deal, I thought. She had raised Huskies for show for some 20-odd years & has just started showing Aussies in the last couple of years. This was the second litter of Aussies she's had and wasn't well known with other Aussie breeders, so she didn't feel like she had a right to charge as much.

I may be biased, of course, but I think Bandit here is just about the cutest puppy in the world. I get to take him home a week from today (because I'll be moving shortly before that).  I have about 20 other better pictures of him, but don't have time right now to resize them. But yeah...sorry, I'm just beside myself with joy.

Awww what a cutie.  Sounds like you got a good price on him.  I'm going to go ahead and put my answer to your first question just in case anyone else out there need the help.  My dal that pasted we got in 1994 we payed $600 for him, but we got his paper and $100 back once he was neutered.  Our next dog were looking at a Kuvasz and so far the breeder I talked to said usually pet price was about $900 or up and show quality is around $1200 or up.

Akita, if you are still around, my sister lives in NYC and she has seen westies listed for close to $3000 and these were pet quality, I guess because they are small and can live in apartments. I lived in PA and pet quality was about $600, we live in ID now and it's about the same here.

At one time, I've seen purebred Sibes go for $1,500. But, not every breeder charges that much. And your experience falls in line with what others say around here. That you can buy a healthy purebred without going broke. Especially considering that at least one person who posted here paid far more for a "designer" mixed breed, without the health certs and pedigree.

If you really trust the breeder and her program for Aussies, I'd say good luck and congratulations. Side question; what is she doing with the Sibes, anymore?

Im sorry, but 3 grand for a pet pup? That is ridiculous! Ww, talk about giving up an arm and a leg for a dog!
