Glenda, call your sister to see what's going on.

I agree.  Your sis probably needs to talk to you too but doesn't want to worry you.  Women are sometimes so concerned with not worrying each other they forget to lean on each other.

    Thankfully, Sis called.

Last Sunday (13th) Jen went to Urgent Care because her ingrown toenail was badly infected and painful.  Jen isn't a wuss, but she does know her body, so it was bad for her to even go in the first place.

UC told her it wasn't infected, call a podiatrist, and sent her home.  Not even a quick blood draw to check for oh, I dunno, maybe an increased white cell count?

Tuesday,(15th) the podiatrist did the surgery so that the toenail won't grown back and become ingrown again.  Said it was the worst he'd ever seen, but again, no antibiotics.

Thursday morning (17th) she went to the ER in severe pain.  Again, no blood work, but they put her on a morphine drip and sent her home later.  She was NOT given antibiotics.  Friday evening, Sis took her to the ER again and they admitted her.  This time she got IV antibiotics and pain meds.  And, they released her Saturday evening so she wouldn't be exposed to the superbugs in the hospital.

She saw a DIFFERENT podiatrist on Wed who immediately scheduled her for surgery today.  Last night Sis took her to the ER out of town since she was so lethargic.  Spectrum couldn't do the surgery today, so she was taken to the Surgery Center for the 1PM surgery.  The entire toenail needed to be removed, the area debreeded and then inserted two drain tubes into the foot to help drain the infection.  He did send her home, agreeing with the first hospital that she is too fragile to be IN the hospital.

She is on TWO antibiotics and pain meds as well.  Sis will not be coming home for several days at least, until Jen is back on her feet and able to function.

Thank you all for the prayers.  She's not out of the woods yet, so please keep them going.

I can't believe she wasn't put on antibiotics from the get go.  What an asinine bunch of %#&&% to not run blood work and then the first podiatrist doesn't put her on any either?  I'm speechless.  I know that dispensing antibiotics for no good reason is not good medicine but this sounds like a case where she should have been put on them the FIRST time she was seen!

Prayers are being sent from GA that she will soon be home with her family, who loves her and will care for her with their loving touch.

Well, yeah, Jackie, and the dork who did the first surgery sent her home without so much as a BAND AID? That's a pretty bloody procedure......

Marty, she is home now.  This surgeon was afraid to let her stay in the hospital because of her extremely weakened condition and all the major stuff IN the hospital.

Apparently Jen's DH is on everyones "list".  Last night HE didn't think she needed to go to the ER and when Sis, BIL and Jen convinced him that, well, yeah, she does, he insisted on the SAME DANGED hospital that didn't take proper care of her last time.  Apparently Jen told her DH that she would DIE at that hospital, if last time was any indication.  BIL was livid....she is, after all, his baby girl.

I'm so sorry :( Sending her all the good, healthy, strong-immune thoughts I can muster.

My mom actually got a chance to talk with Jen tonight and said that she finally feels like she's on the mend.  Huge relief for Mom to talk with her.

I'm just reading all this now Glenda.  I'm so glad she's doing better!!  That is unreal that all that started with an ingrown toe nail.

    • Gold Top Dog

That is an answer to prayer!! RAH!

    • Gold Top Dog

I'm just seeing this too; I'm glad she's finally gotten the treatment she needed and I'll keep her in my prayers.

She saw the surgeon today.  He cleaned, redressed etc, and did blood work to check to see that the white cell count was declining.  He's meeting her at the office tomorrow to rinse and repeat.  She'll be on Cipro for a full month.  Still on strict bedrest, but at least it looks like she's improving.

That's good news Glenda. Give Jan our best and sending prayers for a quick recovery.

Dang it! There is a saph infection and the white count is up again.  They are putting her back in the hospital overnight to do an IV drip.

Oh dear. Poor thing and all of this just from an infected toe. Sending positve vibes her way.
