I have very happy news to report this morning -- Spike was found yesterday!! Last night I asked Tonka one more time to please guide Spike to someone who would find him -- I knew after a week that things were looking grim. I didn't expect to see any news when I got on the computer this morning, so I was thrilled when I saw the blog entry. Thank you to everyone for your good thoughts and vibes -- I have to think they helped lead to this happy ending! Here are the details from the volunteer's blog, if you're interested:
"It's been quite an emotional day! At 8:30 this morning I got an excited call from Kate, a Spike Search volunteer, saying that she was out on Spring Valley Road and that she had seen him, but that he wouldn't come to her. She had driven down the road and suddenly there he was walking along the side of the road. She got out of her car, and she thought for a minute he'd come to her, but he backed away and went through the fence and down into the ravine. She said he looked pretty bad. She wanted me to come out, since he knows my voice. My wonderful husband jumped out of bed and off we went. When we got to where Kate was, she hadn't seen him again. It was a very overgrown area with lots of huge bushes and undergrowth and fences. I climbed over the fence and went as far as I could calling him but no luck. Kate went one way down the road and John the other. We looked and called for about an hour and I was getting so discouraged. I went back up on the road and walked toward where John was and suddenly we saw him deep in the ravine. I called him and he looked right at me, but didn't come. I know now that he was too weak. Then he disappeared in the undergrowth and he was so far away on the other side of a fence and way down in the ravine. I was just sick. Then a young man on a bike suddenly appeared and asked if we had lost a cat. I said, no, a dog and that he was in the ravine. He said the owner of the land lived a ways down the road and had paths in the ravine. I ran down to the farm house and met a wonderful grandmother and her granddaughter who were so eager to help us. The grandmother went down one way and the granddaughter and I went down the other. We probably searched for another half hour and nothing. Kate was on the road and suddenly saw Spike slowly walking toward the grandmother. We heard the grandmother shout, "He's here!" We ran to her path and I'll never forget the feeling I had when I saw our boy -- there he was, standing, very wobbly. I ran up to him and he licked my face. He was so weak he couldn't walk and could barely stand. He is emaciated. But his eyes are bright. We carried him up to the road. On the way to the vet he just lay in my lap, his head either on my arm or tucked under my arm against me. Occasionally he would reach up and give me a lick. I am sure that this would have been his last day alive if we had not found him. The granddaughter told me while we were looking that there are many coyotes and even mountain lions in the area. So right now Spike is sleeping on a warm blanket in a vet kennel, getting fluids intravenously. I've talked with Marsha (owner of Hopes Haven) several times today and we are all so happy! Now Spike will really get his forever home with Elizabeth!"
