Prayers for my dad, he's in the hospital

    Hi all,

I want to ask for prayers for my dad.  He's suffering with a real bad case of kidney stones. Friday night he was throwing up and sweating buckets. He couldn't even keep water down. The local ER doc gave him some pain and anti-nausea meds and said to go to the VA Hospital Monday morning. Well, yesterday, he was real bad again so they loaded up and headed to Houston.

Thank God for the ER doc who realized he hadn't eaten or drank anything for almost 48 hours and admitted him instead of sending him to the hotel and scheduling him with the urology dept. Monday like they had planned on.  They did a CAT scan, and know that there are 2 stones in the left kidney.  When the docs came in today, it turns out that he also has stones in his right kidney.  The left kidney is inflamed but not infected. But they are going to do a MRI w/ contrast to get a better picture, and to also get a look at his right kidney.  There is talk about a 'mass' with the right kidney. Now whether this mass is a stone or what we don't know.  He is allergic to iodine, so they can't do a CAT scan with contrast, so lets hope the MRI shows a good picture.

They already have him in the que for surgery before the end of the week.  They are going to go in with a scope and try to get the stones with the 'claw basket', and if not, put a stint in and use a laser to try to break it up.  They will also use lithotripsy after the attempted stone removal.

He's had problems with kidney stones before, but this round, he has them in both kidneys and he is in bad shape. He hasn't been feeling good for several months, and being a man, he wouldn't go to the doctor. When we did get him to go, apparently he wasn't totally truthful with the doc, so he never checked his kidney's!! But the fact that he has been on antibiotics has probably saved his kidney.  He has gotten worse since he finished the antibiotic 2 weeks ago.

Please pray that they will do the surgery SOON and be able to successfully remove the stones, and that his kidneys haven't been damaged!  They've got him on morphine, but he's in a lot of pain.  My mom is going to have to come home tomorrow because of the incredibly high price of hotel rooms.  She's worried about him and having to leave him down there by himself is so hard on her. I know all he is doing is sleeping, but still.  It is hard on me and my brother as well that we can't be down there with them.  We'll go down for the surgery, but we hate not being able to be there to help him, and hear from the docs ourselves.

Your prayers and good thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sending lots of prayers for your Dad and family.  My DH has had stones, not quite as badly, but I know how painful they are and how worried you must be.

Thanks everyone for your prayers and good thoughts.  Dad is having surgery sometime tomorrow.  They will be scoping both kidneys - so a minimum of 2 hours, probably more like 3 or 4 hours by the time they get done getting (they are going to get them!) the stones.

Mom came home yesterday to get clean clothes, but she is going back early in the morning, so I would ask for prayers for her safe trip.  She hates Houston traffic, and she does not do well with driving in traffic since the car wreck we had.

We are just praying that they are able to get all the stones with the basket and laser. Twelve years ago when he had them real bad in his right kidney, they ended up putting a catheter in his back until they could bust up the stone.  It tooks months!  We are really not wanting him to go through that again.  If it wasn't for the morphine now.....

I'll let you know how things go. Postive thoughts!!

I want to thank everyone for their good thoughts and prayers. Dad seems to have made it through surgery without any problems.  It took them about 4 hours, but Mom didn't get to talk to the doctors afterwards. They told her to wait in the wrong area, so she never saw the docs to find out if they got all the stones or what.  GRRR!!!!  She'll talk to them in the morning when they make their rounds. Dad is not very lucid due to the morphine.  I am hoping they will change his pain meds as they really seem to be keeping him fuddle-brained and incoherent.  He was able to indicate to Mom that he isn't hurting as much around his left kidney, so hopefully they were able to remove the stones.

I'll let you know what we find out tomorrow, but I would ask for your continued prayers. He has been sick for several months now, and it is going to take him awhile to bounce back from this I am afraid.  Why can't men admit they need help and go to the doctors? *Sigh*

My family is very appreciative of your thoughts and prayers!

YEAH!!!!  Mom FINALLY got to talk to the doctors this evening and they were able to remove all the stones!!!!! I need a Snoopy dance icon LOL. There removed 3 from the left kidney, and the mass in the right looks to be scar tissue from the last bout with stones in '94. So no catherter, no other treatments will be needed right now. They'll do another CAT scan of the right kidney in a few months to make sure of the scar tissue, but other than that, he gets to come home this weekend hopefully! That will depend on his pain level, which is pretty bad today, but hopefully by Sunday at the latest he'll get to come home![sm=dance.gif]

Thank you all for your prayers. It has made this whole week easier knowing three were prayers being said for my dad.[sm=angel.gif]Hugs to everyone out there!!

That is good news!  Prayers still coming for an uneventful recovery!  Hopefully he will pay attention to twinges now...lithotripsy is a lot less invasive!

Don't you just know it!  He is just going to have to take better care of himself and not wait till he's in such bad shape to get help.

Mom called and they are letting Dad come home today.  Hopefully they'll be home by 7ish.  I'm going to cook dinner for them so that is one less thing they will have to worry about today.  It'll be great to hug his neck!

I am so happy that things turned out wonderfully.
How nice of you to make supper and let mom and dad relax.
My dad passed away 10 years ago and the warmest thing I remember are those daddy neck hugs, nothing feels better :-)
Prayers and best wishes being sent to your dad and all of you.
