Prayer request for my Mom.

Thanks friends. I just spoke to Mom. She can't spend a lot of time on the computer so I will continue emailing her your messages. She had a question that maybe Callie or others can help with. She is on a very restricted diet.(diabetes onset no cheese, breads, rice or fruits) She needs to get more protien but is at a loss how. She is feeling weak and needs to get up and eat an egg in the middle of the night. I suggested the portion packages of tuna, salmon, chicken and/or of course a small steak. Any other easy appetizing ideas? She needs to keep her strength up. She got some fresh ground peanut butter.

Could she drink any of the protein drinks?  It just seems like it might be an easy thing for grabbing in the middle of the night and most of them are actually really yummy.  I know there are probably lots of other ideas, but it's the first thing that came to mind.  I had some oral surgery years ago and they had me drinking milk shakes made from Carnation Instant Breakfast, milk, banana and a raw egg (a no-no now, but not at that time).  It was yummy!!  My DH uses something similar but instead of the instant breakfast, he uses a protein powder.

cakana, My first thought was protien drinks too. But I guess they have to much sugar.

But I guess they have to much sugar.

I did think about that and figured it might be an issue, but there must be some tailored to restricted salt and/or sugar diets.  It might even be necessary to make them completely from scratch using Splenda and low sugar fruits, sugar free yogurt, etc., but I just feel confident it could be done.  My DH is in a grueling firefighter academy right now and takes a couple of protein bars with him each day.  As we've been shopping for them, I've noticed the array of ingredients is pretty vast and maybe finding a low sugar one of those would be an option?

What about unsweetened soymilk? If she doesn't like it plain, there's all kinds of ways to use it.

I'm getting to this post late, but I'm sending good thoughts to you, your Mom, and your family during this upsetting time.  I've had friends and family go through chemo for various kinds of cancer.  Some have a hard time, others do quite well.  I'm sure it'll help that she's working with a Naturopath as well as an Oncologist.

As for protein sources, I know there are powders you can buy.  My husband has used them when he's into a particularly serious workout regime.  I also have a friend who used them when she was pregnant with twins and she simply couldn't get the recommended protein based on diet alone.  I don't think the powder tastes too good, so mixing it with something helps.  My friend made yogurt smoothies.  Perhaps some additional snack ideas and recipes could be found if you searched on line for "low sugar, high protein recipes" or something.

Again, sending good vibes your way, and the best thing we all can do for our health (physical and mental) during such a major hurdle is to keep feeding ourselves with positive energy from the support of loved ones.  May your Mom face each day with a hopeful spirit, feeling the thoughts and prayers of others holding her up.
