Perseverance in training, as I am sure you know, will get you both through this.  I survived, you will too!  Good luck, and we want pics!

Kate, thank you so, so much! I am here at work with tears in my eyes - so grateful that I have tapped into your words of wisdom!

I don't breed dogs, nor am I a trainer. But, I have an affinity for dogs and a huge amount of love for all dogs, especially my own! I can and will have all the patience in the world just as long as I know I am proceeding properly - for my puppy's sake as well as that of my own and my husband's.

I have found such good, loving advice from you, Anne and Glenda! I am so, so grateful!

No need for tears, I am happy to share my experiences.  Ben is the first puppy I have ever owned (not the first dog though) so I am new to all of this myself.  Honestly, everyone here has helped me SO much as well, especially during the tough times when Ben is acting like a fool, lol!  All of the stuff you talk about is still just so fresh in my mind.

Your pup is just ADORABLE.  Ben and I both send kisses!

They were tears of relief, actually! Whew! Ya think you have a rapport with you pup, then one day you wake up and can't communicate at all.......it's so disheartening. But, I've taken heart again![:)]

He weighed in at 26 lbs. last Wednesday. Here's a picture of a friend/visitor with my "baby" in her arms.

Looks like she could ride him! :p

And back to Ben from me and Shane (whom I'm teaching to "give kisses" instead of mouthing. He's getting there......)

That's OK then!  Honestly with Ben sometimes I have thought he'd never "get" something, like housetraining or not attacking me when he saw me with his food bowl....but suddenly those things went away, almost overnight.  I am sure we'll encounter more things like that as he gets older and faces more challenges, but having established a pattern now of not giving in, just being patient and persistent, I am confident we'll always make it through.  To me it sounds like you're off to a great start, and you have a great dog.  :)

Dances with Woofs (I agree, fantastic handle!),

Shane is a big puppy cutie!  I love his ears.  My boy has lopsided ears as well, and it always makes me smile.  Welcome to the boards.

Thank you very muck Glenmar and Spiritdogs, your help is much appreciated. I will definately stop hitting. I didn't enjoy it in the first place. I saw parents do it when I was young to previuos dogs and thought it must be the right way. obviously NOT! I thought about something you said, Glenmar, regarding a long rope type leash, but was worried he throttled hiself running after dogs, but good idea. Is this what you mean by a cable run? I have also joined a local school for dogs, so hopefully will help. Once again, cheers!

Thanks Kate! It's true. I do have a great dog! He has responded so beautifully to all the suggestions I received here today! He "drops" almost instantly. We walked on leash without his trying to wrestle it away from me! I feel so much calmer knowing there doesn't have to be a battle of wills!

Thank you for the welcome and compliments on my boy! Ace is a handsome fella! I'll bet you're sooo in love, as I am!

SMOGGYLAND I'm sure you're glad you found your way here to get all this wise and effective advice. Isn't it wonderful to know that the only time you'll "lay hands" on your pupper is to scratch his ears, rub his belly or scratch his chest? Your dog will reward you with loyalty and love![align=right]

Thank you Glenmar and Spiritdogs for some good advice. I have now smacked him since, as I didn't really want to in the first place, but I had witnessed parents doing it when I was a child, towards previous dogs, therefore thought it was the correct thing to do. obviously NOT. I do like your idea, Glenmar, regarding the cable run. Is this just a long rope like lead tied to a drain post etc. I thought about that, but was a little cautious that it could choke him when running after another dog?

    Cheers

    NOT SMACKED HIM*

Yes, very much so, Dances with Woofs. This looks a great forum and I am glad I found it. Thank you.

A cable run is tyically plastic coated heavy guage wire that you attach between trees, or between the house and garage, or whatever. You  need TWO places to attach the ends, and then  you put a similar runner ON that top wire and that lower one goes onto the dogs collar or harness.  I'd suggest using a harness on him instead of a collar in case he DOES hit the end really hard....less chance of tracheal injury that way.  Just ask at a petstore for a cable run....tell them you want something that attaches to trees or whatever and also has a lead that attaches to THAT.

Thank you! I understand now. The first rope, attached at two point, provides the second rope, attached to the dog, elasticity, therefore not going to injure the dog?

    Thanks

What it actually does is gives your dog more running room....he's got the length of the lead he wears, PLUS the length of the actual run line.  If he is a lunger after other dogs, I'd put a harness on him to protect from tracheal damage.
