a dog's mourning

Thank you.It never occured to be to have a packmember present at a euthanization.I wasn't sure it was possible for the onlookerSleep to remain calm.I suppose there are factors to consider when doing things this way.

When Daisy passed away, I was not with her. (and to this day I still regret that). She was with my boyfriend at the time, about 200 miles away. Right before he called me to tell me that I needed to get my butt back here, both Oscar and Levi were acting funny. They were pacing the house, whining and whimpering. Oscar had his nose to the door the entire time I was getting ready.

This summer, almost 7 months after she died, my room-mate (who owns Oscar and Levi) brought them back to our house, after being gone for 3 months over the summer. Oscar tore through the entire house, looking for something. He went in the backyard and searched the entire acre. Then he came back inside, and sighed a great big sigh.

I wish I had thought enough to take the blanket she died on back with me to let them smell it. They never got closure. But then again, neither did I.

On a similar note to what Becca was talking about...

Misha lived with his sister, Lassie, from the time he was 8 weeks old until he was about 6 months old. Emily was visiting me and we had Misha with us when she told me that Papa'd let Lassie out and she hadn't returned. We assumed Beautiful had killed her. Upon hearing that Lassie hadn't returned, Misha whined, and acted a bit depressed for a day or so. Mind you he was an entire state away from her at the time. There was no way for him to know what that meant. That's my only experience (so far) with dogs and dealing with death.
