The war between "positive" and "correctional"

Perhaps I ought.  Perhaps later I will.  I got a couple of paragraphs in and started yawning, "oh it's another one of THSOE articles...." Read one, read 'em all.  Sorry.  This subject has been exhausted on this forum, many times over.... and many articles like that one have been discussed up and down and round and round and back again.  I can't see a discussion about this one being any different to the last 50 or so such discussions, hence my lethargy in reading it to the end to discuss....

I agree with starting a new thread if you want more discussion.  This particular one has gone beyond its life span and people aren't really paying attention to new posts here.  Just saying.

Dude.. I just read every post on this thread except for the link and now my brain hurts... *dies*  A lot of thought provoking posts.. *trots off to think..*

Think about this: You know, terriers had a long reputation for being untrainable?  Well, that old wives tale comes from the days when correctional training was the norm, and it was quite heavy handed as well.  Terriers don't do well with that kind of training IMO&E... they were bred for a LONG time to

    a) be independent and work well on their own, without taking direction of a human and

    b) keep going with whatever it is they are intent on, even in the face of great adversity or punishment. Look up "tenacious" in the dictionary and there will probably be a picture of a terrier underneath it!

I think that, for correctional training to work on a terrier, with a proper terrier temperament, it has to be harsh beyond what could be considered reasonable.  I'm just sayin'.

I completely agree. With my training, I use what works for the dog and makes the work fun.  For Sandy since she is a terrier with a confidence problem, I use food, play and FUN! lots of fun! Lol. For Maze, I used soft corrections, food and fun. Yes I've used tools for Maze but it was just a matter of finding what works with her. Smile
