Does your Dog Flush?

    Does your Dog Flush?

My 3 year old Aussie male, always finishes his bowel movement with scratching up the ground with his hind legs. We like to joke that he's flushing his toilet. About 2 or 3 weeks ago, he started doing the same scratching action after peeing. Do your dogs do that too? What is the significance of the scratching? At this rate I don't expect to have any lawn left this summer!

They have scent glands in their feet:) It's a territorial thing. Mine do it, too.

My dogs do the same thing and I always thought they were trying to cover up their mess.  We watched a special on dogs on TV not long ago though and it said that dogs have sweat glands in their feet and when they do that scruffing over their poop or pee, they're actually leaving an extra marker with the scent from thier paws.  Seems like the smell of the poop would be enough, but I guess not [:D]

Max does that, too.  I always thought the same thing - that he was just trying to bury what he did.  Guess you learn something new every day.[:D] Are they trying to let other dogs know who the *pee mail* is from?

Willow will dig a hole, pee in the hole and then do a little tap dance on top of it.  I don't know, sometimes I'm like, just pee and let's get moving!

Once in a while, Jasmine will do it after pee, too, but mostly just after poop.

Mine do it all the time.  Its so embarrassing on walks-they try to tear up other people's lawns!

Blue does it a few times, but it mostly he gets it over with and wants in. Unless it's summer or the coldest day of winter then he sniffs around, stares at everything, and he will sit down to watch the cars go by. No you can not pull on leash he just takes him longer to come back in or he walks really slow.[:@][;)]

Tyler does it also. He even scruffs up the carpeting when he lays down to sleep. We say he's fluffing up his pillow. Now that I think of it, he goes out, piddles and scruffs the ground (Tyler was here!) then runs in for a treat, then uses those same paws to fluff his pillow - eeew[8D]

Brown does that frequently, but it's usually when another animal has been in the yard or when we visit places he hasn't been in a while. I saw Grey do it for the first time yesterday, and I laughed my butt off because he just doesn't have the skills to kick like that.

    I think I just figured out Willow's people issues. SHE'S A CAT[:D][:D][:D]

This is so very funny, as I was just going to post this question!  My Zoe does this same thing, and with great attidude as well!  Its very funny to watch, this little Shih Tzu scratching up the ground  like she is the queen of Sheba!  Thanks for answering my question with out me having to ask it!

Odie does this too. "Flushing" Ha ha - I never thought of it like that, but you're right. I always figured he was just "wiping" his hands once the deed was done. I guess you learn something new everyday! [:D]

This is way too funny - Riley does the same thing.  It truly is funny to see this little 10 pound munchkin digging up dirt.  The first time he did it I never expected it ... and i was bending down to get the poop and got assaulted with dirt and mud right in my face ... LOL ... that was a hoot.

It´s not only that they have scent glands in their feet, the "scent" of pee and poo really does it.
They are trying to make their mark more "eye-catching" for other dogs. Dogs often do it very excessively when there is another dog around or when they are very self-confident, especially males.
Or the dog isn`t self-confident at all, then he is trying to pretend he`s a biiiig dog.
My male sheperd mix is doing that demonstratively when there is another male dog and my female dog is around too.
And males like to do that to impress female dogs...like men are [;)]
