Not raising his leg?

    Not raising his leg?

Hi.  My dog Toby is almost a year old and has yet to raise his leg when he goes.  I've heard that male dogs need to be taught to raise their leg but I don't have too many male dogs around that often.  We have a friend with a male leg raiser who comes over sometimes, but rather infrequently what with kids and all.  I had hoped this minimal exposure would be enough but it has not.  Is there anything I should be doing or should I just expect a lifetime squater?  Not a big deal of course Smile, just curious.

    Thanks!

    Carla

Our Sammy(yellow lab) almost never raises his leg and he's 4yrs. old. He was in a kennel for the first 2yrs. of his life, before we got him. I don't really think it makes a differance.

wait a minute I am still trying to wipe the silly smile off of my face......with so many weighty issues in my home this one just tickeled me.

ohhhh kay,  I have 3 males in my home as we type... an 8 year old, 7 year old and a pup going on 8 months. Pup is the only still intact male. They take turns lifting thier legs ... Pup does it once in a blue moon right now,  the older N males simply alternate, One is an only dog for the most part, he is boarding with us long term right now,  The other male lived with our Stud, kept seperate since they battled every now and then  but I guess he figured out the big man peed higher up the tree than he did so he learned... I have never found it made a difference. However I am trying to get a snap  shot of him since Mom still believes he doesn't know how.

My female lifts her leg but my male does not. I have no idea what is going on at my house! They are all turned around Stick out tongue

My male dog goes either way.  If there's a verticle object, he'll target it, but on the lawn he just extends his back legs.  He's 15 months old.

I am absolutely no expert.  But I'm not going to tell him how to pee. Big Smile

    TRUE CALLIE STORY:

A friend of mine has two female mixes (they were stationed in Guam an both dogs are 'boonie dogs' -- a variety of feral dog 'native' that they adopted while hubby was in the service).  Both are medium/large sized dogs.  These folks live in suburban large-city, USA.

One day after coming back from their walk (this lady is positively religious about 'scooping' because she's been on their HOA board) and she gets this phone call from one of her 'old biddy' neighbors -- nasty nasty voice saying "I SAW YOU!!!! ***YOU*** DIDN'T SCOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"huh?  I beg your pardon?  We just got back and neither dog pooped -- so ... no, because they didn't go!"

"***I**** SAW THEM!! and <<>> DID ***NOT*** SCOOP!!!"

"now just wait a second -- meet me outside and SHOW me what I missed -- I'm always faithful to scoop every single time they poop and neither Zero nor Corsair went this time!!!"

So yeah, she meets this old biddy out on the street and the woman is poking thru grass for this imaginary poop.  And she's being REAL nasty.  My friend realized the spot DID look familiar however ....

"You know -- my girls DID go here ... but they did not poop, they peed!!!"

"I SAW THEM -- they POOPED -- they did NOT pee!!! THEY DID *****NOT**** LIFT THEIR LEG!!!"

"Ma'am -- they're girls.  They squat -- they don't lift their legs.  Males do that ... not females.  What you saw was my girls peeding.  They hunch over when they poop -- they SQUAT to pee!"

    "Oh".

The lady turned around and walked away.

True story -- promise.  Now ... do you really want your boy to lift his leg??? *grin*  Keep the world guessing -- it's FUN!!!

I was going to ask the same thing!  I have a 9-month-old who doesn't raise his leg yet.  I'm not sure he's ever going to either because he's hardly ever around male dogs.  I had another male dog who never raised his leg.  I thought maybe I was emasculating my dogs somehow.

Nope -- I think with most of them it's a comfort issue if they aren't into marking a lot.

We were in obedience class and this guy asked the instructer why his dog didn't raise his leg.  All the dogs in the class were rescues so the instructor said probably because they were neutered early but not to be surprised if they started around age two.  So the next year goes by and Freddy is still peeing like a girl.  We drop by class to visit and the first time  Freddy ( now 2 ) ever marks is all over the Dog Training sign.

I've had an 7 week old pup that raised his leg...and a 8y/o dog that didn't until he saw another dog do it at the dog park. He grew up around all b*tches so it just never occured to him, LOL.

My male is 5 and he does a little "half lift" when he pees...just raises his leg a tiny bit off the ground.

One of my five males lifts...and he's the oldest, but the others just never picked up leg lifting.  Thankfully.  Folks seem to scream less about a dog squatting to pee on a walk then lifting a leg to pee on a walk.......

my doggie saler lifts both of his legs while he pees... he does it while standing on his two front paws Confused

Kord does not life his leg, he has a few times, the first when he was 4 months old, I was like ohhhh my gosh, this is going to be a badddd boy. For now he is content to squat and or stretch his back legs out so that he misses his front feet.

I have one lifter & one squatter.  Both dogs were neutered young, & the lifter was raised with females.  I wish that they both would squat, but Bevo loves to read pee mail, & send a reply!Wink
