Alrighty, I don't think the poll is going to happen, so here's the choices. If you don't care, don't post. If you have a preference, state it. By tomorrow morning I'll see which one it'll be, and we'll get the pdf circulating.
    • Dogs ( Canis lupus familiaris) fail to show understanding of means-end connections in a string-pulling task
    • Quantity-based judgments in the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris)
    • Use of experimenter-given cues in dogs
    • Is the dog-human relationship an attachment bond? An observational study using Ainsworth's strange situation
    • Barking in domestic dogs: context specificity and individual identification
    • Do dogs respond to play signals given by humans?
    • Consistency of personality traits in dogs
    • Social cognition in the domestic dog: behaviour of spectators towards participants in interspecific games
    • Attachment to humans: a comparative study on hand-reared wolves and differently socialized dog puppies

Is the dog-human relationship an attachment bond? An observational study using Ainsworth's strange situation

I like a few of them, but this one I will pick.

This just in! Amstaffy is in fact going to post a poll after all, so when it shows up, just go up to the poll folder and cast your vote. Tomorrow morning I'll distribute the PDF (somehow).

Wow they all sound really interesting, I hope we eventually discuss them all!

I am curious about this one:

Dogs ( Canis lupus familiaris) fail to show understanding of means-end connections in a string-pulling task

Scout has a good question.  I have Siberians and they would maybe eat strings, and in fact have...not too good for the digestion..But they will pull a good size sled!

I'm interested in the one about barking in the domestic dog.  Bet you can tell why (about a gazillion clients with barking dogs LOL)

I don't understand.  The pdf documents distribution are going to be controlled on a request basis?  The thread will be a discussion around the subject of the document?  The document will not be available to the general public and views expressed will be based on interpretations and opinions.  Don't you think the "Guest", "Wonderers", or Lurkers will be at a big disadvantage.  I am sure Jamie can answer this better but the stats of a thread show low 'replies' while the 'hits' are high numbers.  This is a public forum where participation is welcomed and this sounds like a focus group agenda.  Can the document be made public so anyone can view and download?  I appreciate the great idea and effort of Houndlove and if I can help let me know.

Quantity-based judgments in the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris)

I like this one.  But they all sound interesting.

This one sounds interesting: Attachment to humans: a comparative study on hand-reared wolves and differently socialized dog puppies

It might be a focus group, but there's no reason why lurkers or guests can't request the pdf if they're interested in the discussion, right?

My guess is that when it's decided which topic we're looking at, the PDF will just be posted here as an attachment? That way newbies and lurkers can download it, check it out, and join in the conversation...

Houndlove maybe you could just pick a topic and go for it, they all sound so interesting! We could use the Poll for the next time around...

Alright folks, looks like there's no clear consensus and the poll never made it up, and that's fine. We'll just start at the top of this list and work our way down.

    The first paper is

    Osthaus, B., Lea, S. E. G., & Slater, A. M.(2005). Dogs ( Canis lupus familiaris) fail to show understanding of means-end connections in a string-pulling task. Animal Cognition 8: 37-47

I've put it online [linkhttp://www.psy.cmu.edu:16080/~tedtutor/fulltext.pdf]at this link[/link] for download by one and all.

Shall we begin our discussion on Monday?
