Its not too late to crate train, Bailey sleeps with us in bed (she is 2.5 mos) and runs free in the house during the day.  I did decide to crate train her just for when we leave until she is trained and old enough to be ok in the house while we are gone.
I put a blanket and toys in the crate and put her in it.  She of course walks right out and I let her.  Just do that sometimes, and I always have the door open, oh and its in the living room right now.
When she falls asleep on the floor or couch (after shes good and knocked out) I will pick her up and gently place her in the crate and she keeps sleeping.  She will wake up and change positions but stay in the crate, sometimes she will walk out and continue sleeping on the floor and I let her (I never force her to stay in it.)  I try to do this each time shes napping (did it just now actually).
Yesterday for the first time on TWO occasions she went in there and layed down, I was so excited! I really didnt know if that method would work, but it sure did.

We put her in there for the first time while we left and she cried a little but when we came home she was sleeping, and she will still go in it, so it didnt traumatize her.

As far as him biting you and stuff, hes a puppy, a very young puppy, and hes going to do this.  Just be gentle and patient, and try to calmly tell him no or walk away like some others have said, and also try to redirect his attention to a toy.
A nice bone or a kong stuffed with something may be a good idea for you to keep him busy with something other than your feet.  Is he getting walks and enough exercise throughout the day?  If not this may be why hes full of energy all night.  Pups have lots and lots of energy and need to expend it somehow.

    Hello Max [:)]

You not only seem to be new to here, I have to suspicion that you might be new to dogs also! [:D] Now, if that were to be the case, then you really really and I mean REALLY ought to read at least one book that teaches you a few things (not just about crates). While there are many I could recommend, let me just tell you one which is by a pretty wide consensus I think among the best ever written for new dog-owners: Jean Donaldson, Culture Clash. That book will teach you not only about crates, but also how to potty train, how to train quite in depth the important commands, what to do and what never to do, how to deal with dogs chewing on you, and so forth.

Good luck and lots of joy with your new puppy (and trust me, it will be even more fun if you know what you are doing!) [:)]

no im not new to having dogs, but last night i put him in his crate and he sleep good in it but one problem is i had to sleep on the floor by it if not he will cry and stuff but tonight im goin to try sleepin in my bed and the crate is by my bed where he can see me.

with him bitein me & stuff when he start bitein me i give him one of his bones or his stuffed monkey but sometimes that will not work lol, i try keepin him in my bedroom with door close when he start bitein me really hard but i hope he will stop but it is driving me crazy and having bite marks and stuff on me it make me look like im nuts or something lol

    good luck

I think if you are planning on having him sleep in there each night, you should not let him out if he cries tonight, stick wih it and make him stay in there, or he will think he gets out for crying.  I read somewhere else that if he cries a lot reach over and stick your finger in the cage to comfort him.

As for the biting, our vet told us to pinch his lower jaw (below his tongue) and his chin.  Firm, but not to hard.  Our lab was biting like crazy on us instead of his toys and I did this once and it worked.  I don't think he's bitten/gnawed my wife or I since we did what the vet told us.

Under the tounge, you mean inside the mouth or outside?
    • Gold Top Dog
Your vet needs to be pinched.

This is foolish and dangerous advice.  Not to mention flat out mean.

I agree with Glenda.  (gee i type that alot)  BF took that approach quite a bit when I wasnt around.  Now I am alpha around here.  Crusher does not listen to BF unless he is waving treats at him.  If he tries to take something from Crusher he has to chase him all over the place and twice he has almost gotten snapped at.  Crusher just simply does not believe that BF is above him.  And no matter what I try BF will not listen to me.

JoeyBear - if your vet say to pinch his lower jaw then u better find a other vet b/c that is kinda mean & your vet seems like he dont know anything about training dogs or anything too.
    -----------------
i have a other problem how do u get a puppy stop chewin on wire's and stuff? b/c i didnt know it and he was chewin on my plugin wire for my router for my computers, is there any other ways to get him stop bitein me too? b/c it is driving me crazy and i think he like chewin on me thinkin im his big chew toy or something lol.

Thats why I asked inside the mouth or outside... I mean either doesnt seem right, and Ive never heard that, but it made me wonder whether he is actually saying you should pinch in their mouth.

I am sometimes amazed by the 'advise' given out by some vets. Good god, do not try this 'pinching' with an adult dog... really. As outlined already, there are better ways to make them stop biting (just screach 'ouch' and stop paying any attention to the dog for a minute or two for instance; the withdrawl of your attention is all that is needed, and the dog soon learns that all attention/fun ends when his teeth touch you). Similar things go for the crating problem: he whines in the crate because the crate is a potentially punitive situation - dogs do not inherently like being caged, you know. So essentially the proper technique is not to stick them in there and wait a few hours and hope they 'break', since that has a multitude of potentially harmful side effects, but to slowly train the dog that the crate is a safe and fun place to be.

Even if this is not your first dog, from the problems you are having I still would suggest to you to read at least one good training/behavior book (like the one I recommended). But hey, thats just my two cents. [:)]

the 'ouch' thing will not work i try that but if im not payin any attention to him he will start bitein me harder and stuff, im thinkin about lockin him in the bathroom for time outs when he start bitein but alot of poeple need to use the bathroom so..i cant do that lol & he has alot of chew toys but he just like chewin & bitein on me [:(], i think i got my puppy use to his crate so...i will see how it will go tonight without me sleepin on the floor by the cage when he is in it see if he will go to right to sleep or not.

i dont got the cost to buy a book + i dont like reading too lol

Hello there.  Congratulations on your new pup!  He sounds like a cutie.

One thing no one has mentioned is that at the age of 8 weeks the puppy can't hold his urine for very long.  Only about 3 hours, and possibly not even that long.  Maybe he's playing with you because he's telling you he needs to potty.

I let my dog sleep in my bathroom with a bed and a potty pad for him to pee on so that I could get a full nights sleep until he was old enough to hold it.  Now he sleeps in bed with me, but I leave a potty pad down for him just in case he needs to go in the middle of the night.

I also agree that he probably needs to expend more energy during the day to get him nice and tired before bed.  [:D
