Dog eating poop

    Dog eating poop

Hey gang, my 10 mo old boxer has a bad habit of eating his poop. Is there anything I can do about this?

    Thank you!

People talk about adding different supplements and such, but the only surefire way I've found to stop it is to pick it up when it hits the ground. I have a dog that (if left to her own devices) will have a buffet on poop. I finally realized what was happening, because every time I picked up poop there was less... and less... and less to pick up. Then one day the only poop in the yard was HERS!!! I finally (well duh Laura) figured it out, and now it gets picked up 2x day, right after they letterip. Ta-dah, no more poop eating. I wonder if they think I'm eating it??

Too funny Laura!  My oldest boy ate poop when he was a pup.  I did the same thing as you, picked up immedately and I also verbally corrected him when I'd catch him doing it.  Don't know if he outgrew it or if I trained him not to do it, but he eventually stopped.

BUT in the past few days (8 years later), he has started doing it again!  Not his poop, but my other dog's poop.  Ugh, so now I'm back outside with him with bag in hand.  I always keep the yard cleaned up on a frequent basis, but it sure is inconvenient to have to stand outside waiting for it to drop.  So I've also been trying to catch him in the act and telling him no.  This is the dog that is blind, so it's easy for me to closely watch him without him knowing it.  But now, here's what he's doing...after quickly realizing that he might under observation, if he finds a pile that he wants to taste...he literally sniffs the air around him to see if I'm standing close by, and if he catches my scent, then he leaves it alone!  I swear he is!

Kelly, that's hysterical! Although Junie has full use of her sight, she will try to grab and run if I don't watch her carefully. She'll sniff around like she's gonna potty, and then snag a piece and run off chomping. *sighs* One thing is, that her poop eating stopped upon our switch to a different food. Come to find out, the formula in the old food had changed. Makes me wonder if anything has changed in your pupper's food? Or maybe its just that time of year - poop and the trees smell good.

Seriously though, I walk around and pick it up, and it disappears. They walk around, pick it up, and it disappears. I really *do* wonder if they think I'm eating it. Hehe. Maybe I'm just poop obsessed. And dog obsessed. Maybe I'm just obsessed period.

My 9 month old puppy is a "poop eater"  she eats her own poop.  I let her poop in an ex pen and keep a bucket next to it and clean it up right away, that way I avoid "poop kisses"!  Yuk!

Nope, no food changes, not even a new bag since this started.

Sorry for hijacking your thread dogmother.

Max doesn't eat his own poop, but he is VERY interested in everyone elses - cats, geese, ducks, etc.  I have to keep him on a really short leash when we're near the wildlife pond and he acts like I'm holding him back from the buffet breakfast of his dreams.

Onyx just about made BF puke one day.  She just finished and turned around and snatched it up.   It kind of worried me.  I mean if its lying around sure, but it just got out!  And the other morning I went down to get them up for the day and it smelled suspiciously like poop but there was no evidence in either kennel.  I'm hoping it was just a fart as they both went when they went outside.

Does anyone know if this can hurt them?   I mean it went through once it should just go through again right?

I've been feeding my pup Innova. Maybe it is time to change?

He is a boxer, a tough, strong little guy and when we walk he spots a poop & woofs it right up. Yuk.

Our trainer told us that eating poop can be a sign of poor nutrition. Problem is we feed kenny holistic all natural food. So I don't know about that theory. But there are those packets called for-bid. You put it in your dog's food and it makes their poop taste bad. People have also put hot sauce on the poop to make it taste bad too. Here is the link for For-Bid. I hope this helps you.

your welcome! its funny b/c we arne't having the problems anymore b/c we moved to a house and he doesn't eat his own poop from what we have seen. it was the apartment complex and all the other poop that he went after!

You can't do better than Innova.  My shepherds aren't exactly whimps when it comes to strength, and they LOVE a good snack but, I've taught them leave it and drop it, and I watch for any piles when we walk.  We're in the country so much more likely to see deer, raccoon, etc poop than anything else.  So long as I spot it first a leave it command works.....when they are off lead tho, if the nose goes to the ground, and I'm not close enough for a leave it, drop it works wonders....grudging wonders, but still...

The past few days, I've been working hard on the leave it command. He seems to be catching on (& so do I)! I've also increased the amount of food per meal, so hopefully between the two, something will work!

I don't honestly think that they eat poop because they are hungry.  I think this is a learned behavior that comes from watching momma clean up after the litter......and also the thing about their inclination to keep their own area clean.....plus, I think it tastes good!

This was never an issue for us...but after the last bunch of fosters, suddenly it's something I have to keep a real eye on.  With the snow melting and uncovering poop that I missed in my daily cleanups, I've had to really keep on top of the yard....now I'm doing it TWICE a day and still keeping an eagle eye on the boys.  Leave it still works, but I have to SEE them going after it, and since we have a walkout basement with a doggie door, I don't always see them in time.  On walks, they're fine, but by golly in the yard it's a real challenge.  Part of it of course is that its a competition.....one decides to snack so the others follow suit......so quick cleanup of THEIRS and leave it for anyone elses is about all I can suggest.....
