Why use a crate?

How can a guard dog be untrained??  Here, dogs for personal protection, except for the redneck owned dogs, are highly trained because of the liability involved.  I guess what you are saying is that they are merely vicious dogs who are supposed to be guard dogs?  Man, in this country that would be asking for a law suit!

As a generalization there are 3 'ways' that people own dogs here: 1) The most common - as guard dogs - these will live outside in the yard often in largish packs- they are untrained but will mostly respond to their owners voice....and large stick if necessary. Many never leave the yard, some are let out a couple of times a day to pee, poo and stroll in the street. The ones that never come out but at times accidentally 'escape' are the alarming ones - clearly frustrated, very aggressive. In our 'village' there are only 4 houses without 'guard' dogs. 2) Toy dogs kept inside and carried everywhere - not that common but increasing. 3) As trained members of the family - this is me! This is still fairly unusual. The concept of 'training' dogs is still fairly new here. Dog's behaviour and nature is seen as inherent and unchanging.
