    urinates on our bed

    Greetings

Our American Pit Bull is a real nice dog. Very heart felt and giving. Last night we came home and he had wet our bed.

Now...Chopper likes to eat Kleanex from time to time, but we try to keep temptations to a minimum.

He's about 8 years old, neutered, and in good health. and ..."in the dog house ! "

Could someone give me an idea to his thinking " ..yup...I better pea in there bed while they're out"

He did it before, when he was young...just once, and now last night.

I'm really not interested in signing up for anything but a bit of feed back might help us.

    Thanks

Any change in toilet habits warrants a vet visit - it could well be a medical problem.

If he doesn't sleep on your bed, then for him it is just a soft, absorbent surface that is away from his sleeping area - perfect for peeing if you're desperate and can't get outside because the humans with the keys and opposable thumbs are out.

There is rarely any more to read into it, so just shut the  bedroom door so he can't access your room.  Don't punish him for inappropriate toileting.  Give him more opportunity to go in the right place, and a high value reward when he does it right.

You are assuming he did it out of spite. Highly unlikely and this sort of thinking is counterproductive when searching for answers to dog behavior.  Vet visit is the first step. Tell the Vet why you are bringing him.

    What does this mean?

Just some of the reasons dogs pee on beds:

Asserting hierarchical status, incontinence, urinary tract infection, cover another scent, left too long without a bathroom break (dog getting older and perhaps has to go more frequently), kidney disease, cognitive dysfunction, seizure, etc.  Jackie G is right - if you love your dog, start with your vet.  If the vet rules out the most common medical causes, then you go to the behavioral issues.  So, you would restrict the dog's access to high resting places, do some training just to re-establish your position, or if necessary do some remedial house training 101.

Well, late to the party again and what I would have said has been said, so "ditto" all of the above.

I do hope you'll reconsidering "signing up" and give us a chance.  We're a fun bunch and  as a group, pretty darned dog savy in just about any situation.

I would have to ditto what the others have said also. If he is peeing on your bed NOW and hasn't since he was a baby, then he needs to go to the vet.

I *thin* she thinks we may want her to join some sort of "list" or training club in order to get information.  (i.e, she had to 'register' to start posting?) -- probably just not familiar with messageboards.

Well, I can certainly relate to that.  I didn't think of it like that Callie, thanks. :)

This is not totally true.  We would like to see a photo or 2 of said bed wetter.  Sometimes a picture can help us help you better. :)

Actually, photos are not ACTUALLY compulsory.  Or myself, Glenda, Anne and a few others I could mention, would have been kicked off ages ago!!

But yeah, photos would be good Big Smile
