Our pug has NO fear of cars!

We just bought a nine month old pug as we are puggle breeders on the west coast. He is the coolest dog, but has NO fear of cars. As we wheel into our long driveway he runs out to greet us and gets directly in front of us, to the point of where we can not see him. We have people come and go all the time and are afraid he will get run over. HOW can we make him respect cars and keep him away from them? He is only out of his kennel when we are working in the yard, etc. but he has done this numerous times. Any suggestions out there?

    A fence!!

Ditto!! Fence or long line that doesn't reach the driveway if you insist on having him in a dangerous situation.

One of the foster dogs has been hit by a car....nearly died and would have had the rescue not stepped in.  He still chases cars.  Some of them just don't learn, so we have to protect them by means of a fence or a long line that doesn't reach the driveway.

You may want to use a traing collar to stop running at or after cars. When used properly the dog will get the hint that he will get a shock that does not fell good and will stop chassing cars. I have used this technique for behaverior problems. You should try this or keep in a fenced yard. Otherwise you could end up with a dead Pug and we don't want that. You can buy a traning collar for less than $200.00 Dollars expensive I guess but better than a dead dog...

If you want a long term solution you can train him to run FROM cars.  My Swissy was a car chaser down our drive and then he would jump all over their cars once they stopped.  I had to do something about that - couldn't have him scratching peoples beautiful cars!

We taught our dog to run to the front porch every time a car came down the driveway.  My DH would simulate entering the drive in his truck and I would run River to the porch - like his life in jeopardy!  I started with a long line and then without the line.  When he gets to the porch you praise and treat him with the yummiest treat you can think of.  It isn't easy, it takes time and practice to train it but after about 3 weeks he got it.  Now when someone comes down my drive he runs to porch and barks his head off..   then once the car stops he will leave the porch and approach the company.

PS:  Ever since we taught River to do this the other dogs do the same and follow.  It's great.

The dog I grew up with had no fear of cars... UNTIL SHE GOT HIT! If she'd been the size of a pug she'd have been killed. Why risk it?

I have yet to meet a dog who learned to stay out of the way of cars. Know a bassett hound who sometimes wanders around in the parking lot of a busy barn who has been run over three times.
