my dog was recently neutered and his behavior changed

If anything I would attribute Max's new boldness to outgrowing puppyhood.He is probably more confident now.A lab's play can be pretty rough and tumble.Does he obey recall or leave it when he is playing?

It's at least a couple of months before the testosterone is out of the body *after* neutering.  So he still has the drive but may be over-compensating.  He should settle down.  Labs truly don't mature until they are almost 3 -- and there is always that stage where they're not sure where they fit into the world and have to experiment.  But he should defer to you and if *you* are uncomfortable distract him.

It's a bit harder, in my own personal opinion, when a dog is so "mature" before they are neutered -- I know that's always a hotly contested topic but I think it's Harder for them to be 'changed' when they are older than it is when they are younger and still adapting to changes in the world and their bodies. 

I think you'll find as the testosterone works it's way out of his body and as he has a chance to re-evaluate how he fits in with others it will settle down.  He shouldn't become more aggressive and I wouldn't allow it.  He may need to be re-directed but you'll need to be super aware of how other dogs treat HIM.

 I agree with 4HAND that this may have more to do with his being at the age of social maturity than with a coincidental neutering.  Males are generally less aggressive after neuter.  But, the dog that wants to be in charge will be more that way as they mature, not less.

do the other dogs object to this or seem uncomfortable or try to get away? this sounds like normal rough lab play to me.

Thats just a 2 y/o Lab. Sam's 3 and plays like that. Neutering normally doesn't change they're tempermant(at least not with my dogs). But with older dogs, I agree with Callie, they are more set in they're way, and it's a little more difficult.
