    New ideas for crating Abe.

Abe has separation anxiety so when we do crate him he does bark. He has gotten better when we get home b/c he won't be allowed out of his crate until he stops barking and his calm. He knows b/c we will let Kenny out b/c he waits quietly in his crate and will ignore Abe.

So at home he doesn't that well but if we take them to DH's parents house we will take our portable pop up crates. Kenny of course does well but Abe does not. Some times he wrestles with that thing so much that he ends up on the other side of the room. I am worry he is going to totally bust out of it. Can you think of another option or a crate that would be light weight that Abe couldn't tear up easily?

Poor Abe!  What have you tried to get him to like the crate just a little bit?  Btw, love that pic.  Looks like Kenny is trying to mellow out ole Abe there with that big yawn ; )

My male Sibe doesn't relish getting into his crate sometimes, but dutifully will go w/ head hanging low.  I often will give a piece of cheese (w/ comforting "good boy" which is most important I think) for goodnight snack. Perks him up a little.  It is not unlike the child who won't go to bed in my household.

I am sure there are a lot of other things, comfort measures etc that could help alleviate Abe's stress level on this thing.

Could you use an ex pen?  Some dogs feel better if there's no "roof".  Others don't do so well because they move the pen all around, as with the pop ups.  Try leaving an interactive toy, such as a stuffed Kong, or a Buster Cube with kibbles in it.  Anxious dogs are often hyped up for the first 20 minutes you are gone, and sometimes the toy acts as a distraction during the first critical minutes.

He does not mind being in the crate if we are in there with him. In fact, at night time Abe will go in there without a fight. He has a squishy pad to lay on and we put a towel in there so he could nest it and get comfortable.

It is when he is left alone that freaks him out. I don't think he messes with his metal crate at home b/c he knows it won't work. But in that pop-up crate he can scratch at it and try to move it around to see if he can get the zipper un-done.

When we take the dogs over to his parents house and we leave, they are usually put in the utility room with their pop-up crates. I don't know if an ex pen is logical. We do make an effort to put in toys for him to play with, but he gets so stressed that he won't even try to get the food out! We come home and all the little treats in the toys are still there.

I need to buy that book you suggested. I think it has been suggested to me here before.
