Jobs for Dogs

She fairly regularly shows people that their PRT do NOT have to be insane, and that rewarding calmness can create a wonderful house dog.

My vet has one, too, and hers isn't crazy either.     But, then, she's like Emma, and has a job or two...

Woobie - goodness knows? All-American Fluffy Dog, I like to see BC there but ???  Job: To encounter the big scary world on a daily basis and become a "Big Brave Dog" (ala Chuckie on Rugrats)  We've used pretty much all the locations in my area and have moved onto the big bad inner city Richmond where he was born, MUCH more challenging!

Indie - Border Collie - bred for herding - Job: meet and greet as many people as possible, give loves, get loves, rehabilitate Woobie's fear of children by showing him they don't eat dogs.    Will begin therapy work as soon as there's a test clinic to get him certified, most likely Delta Society since he's passed that test in a mock run through already.

Does your vet also have the habit of flinging treats at the dog when s/he's being calm? I know people must think I'm insane, but gee.... Right now, Emma's been cooped up for over a week with this tropical storm, and she's lying on my mom's lap, watching a movie. Flinging treats works!

They're pretty neat dogs, when they're kept stimulated enough.

Not really, but that's because she's usually carrying a bunch of stuff out to a barn from her car (no hands left over for the treats) - she's my horse vet in addition to being my small animal vet!   I think it's just because her dog is a real farm dog when they're at home - probably gets to chase rats in their horse barn LOL. 

1. Kenya, German Shepherd Dog

2. Kenya is from working lines (very old herding/tending lines and lines that produce schutzhund, protection, border patrol, SAR, and police dogs).

3. She doesn't really have any jobs, but to keep her busy, we do agility, drive building games, long walks, some road work, we previously did a lot of training and competed in rally but aren't doing as much anymore.  I also let her chase prey, track deer, and chase and wrestle her "brother" dog as much as she wants. 

Max:  Not sure what he is, so not sure what his mixes were bred for.

Jobs:  Cleaning the dishes before they go in the dishwasher, sitting in the front doorway to make sure we get all the groceries out of the car, protecting us from killer squirrels and letting us know someone's at the door by standing there with his nose against it and his tail wagging whenever the doorbell rings.

Joyce

Mariah    Yellow Labrador (should be Newfoundland) Retriever (American, not English)

Bred to retreive nets and later trained for bird hunting.

Retired Guide Dog. Now about as animated as a rug. (Hey, shes retired----what else is she gonna do?) Big, loveable goofball dog who now gets to get all the lovin' she craved but couldnt get while working.

Roanna    Black Labrador (see above) Retreiver (also American)

Same as above

Active Guide Dog. Doesnt miss a thing that goes on when working. When off duty, shes usually in Moms lap, at Moms feet, in Moms bed (Dad is not too wild about that part), generally waiting to be back on duty as she loves to work. Goodwill ambassador and helps Mom educate others about service dogs in general, and Guides in particular.

 Akyra - 1/2 Border Collie 1/2 German Shep/Rott/Chow - ( accidental breeding obviously! ) bred for:  herding mostly

Her jobs include being a bicycle dog, being my constant companion, tennis ball & frisbee freak, extreme water dog, fly catcher, and she's well known for hitting guys in just the right spot either when they're standing or sitting in a chair ( its happened multiple time, guys need to wear a cup around her).  Oh ya super sneezy snuggler, it's inevitable that she'll sneeze when she's snuggling.  She's my all around dog, she'll try anything it least once for me.  And sidecar dog!

Bella - not sure of breeding - some pitt bull and??........origianlly bred for? who knows!

Bella is a puddle, shes not a very confident dog at all, but she loves to be loved on. her jobs are bicycle dog, cuddle mutt, paw shakes, and just sitting in front of you and staring at you, which she does on a daily basis. She's also my destroyer - beds are no match for her. Hopefully she grows out of that. I also call her my floppy dog. She's also just learning the joys of fetching tennis balls.

Sheba - Rottweiler/ Doberman or a rotterman - herding, guarding, companion ship

Sheba's jobs include - making sure everyone else is in line, being the first to know of any treats or goodies being handed out, being a doom bringer at times ( how dare other dogs play with out her!), companion dog, doggie flatuelence extrodinare, toy destroyer.  Sheba is my family's favorite, everyone loves her, most likely because she's the mellowist out of the pack. her only 'real' job is going for walks.
