5 gaint steps BACK!

    5 gaint steps BACK!

Maze has some social problems, she's kinda aggressive towards certain dogs and people. But I've worked really hard with her to make sure the incidents are few and far between. She's hardly ever off leash but these past three weeks I've been putting her on the porch since I remembered there's a gate blocking the stairs leading to the yard.

Now our morning routine is: Walk, feed, then put on the porch to enjoy the sun. The front door is open so she can come in and out of the house. Well yesterday morning, we did our usual thing and put her on the stairs. About half an hour later I hear snarling and growling coming from the front yard. She had (for the first time in her life) broke thru the gate and attacked a man walking past the yard. She didn't bite him (thank god!) but she was following him, snarling. I went and got her, apologized to the man and asked if he was alright then continued on.  Upon closer inspection of the gate, I noticed someone had kicked out one of the planks on the gate leaving a hole big enough for her to fit through.  So now I've got to fix and enforce the gate before she can go back out there.

I have no idea what set her off about this particular guy although I do know that we have had problems with him over his opinion and treatment of Maze while I'm walking her.  He said comments to her and I've seen him almost kick her while she's been tyed up outside of a store. I'm not justifying her reaction but just trying to get an idea of what set her off in that particular moment.  It's sad to me because we've come so far and now I've got to take a few steps back and try again. I am considering putting Maze in a Feisty Fido class once I get some wheels so hopefully that will help.

It happened because she's not good with people.  Going to a class is a great idea and working with her on it is too.  But, MHO she will never be completely trustworthy.

With an aggressive or potentially aggressive dog you've got to have reinforcements in place at all times.  If she was allowed on the porch due to the fence that's fine but she still should of been restrained so that if someone should open the gate she would not be able to get to them.  And, you've always got to be very aware of the condition of gates, leashes, whatever you are using.

Also, wanted to add, she shouldn't be tied outside a store either, she's not the kind of dog for that--based on this info.

I think the Feisty Fido class is a good idea.  Then you can work with other dogs in people in a controlled environment with a professional.

She used to be trusted outside stores. But now if I can't take someone with me, Maze stays home.   I guess I never noticed the gate that day cuz I was still half asleep when we went for our walk. Lol.

I guess it's just sad to me cuz she used to be a really friendly dog and then something happened. I know that she'll never be completely trustworthy  which is semi hard for me cuz she's so social to majority of the people.

She may or may not be good with people but early experiences can affect a dog's relation to that person and sometimes humans, in general.

The boy that lives behind us would throw dirt clods at Shadow and poke sticks at him through the fence. Shadow has never forgotten. Mostly he will bark at them when they are in the back yard. They think they are helping by making faces at him. Shadow is good around kids and was raised around little kids. It just so happens that the boy behind us is the Spawn of Satan. I finally had to threaten legal action in order to get the parents to curb his behavior. Otherwise, they don't correct him. But, for a while, I could tell by his bark that Shadow thought of that boy differently than other humans he has met.

Here's the legal idea. According to the law a domestic animal is property. If another person damages your property, you can call the police and register a complaint. You can also file a claim on the offender's homeowner's or tenant's insurance.

Or hire Ron's Bodyguard Services. We make problems go away.

Oh! How much is Ron's Bodyguard Services?

I'll have to look in to the legal aspect here. I'm not sure how it works here. Thanks for the advice!

Actually, if I was a Brit Can, I would just take a walk with you and the dog. Often, I have this look that makes people think twice. I look like a biker, even with my short hair. It's probably the 1,000 yard stare that I have. Which is made even stronger when I get in someone's face, as I don't blink or flinch.

Sweet! I could use you around here. And not just with the dog. People around here are not the greatest. Smile Lol. My neighbor wants to hire you as well. Lol

Then I will have to calculate a group discount.

One day, I do hope to visit the pacific northwest. My (by sanguinity and marriage) step-daughter, her hubby, and our granddaughter live in Oregon.

With people, most times they are bluffing. When you call their bluff, they back off. The few times I have been in a scuffle, the other person didn't bluff. They just started something that I would finish.

I find it pretty coincidental that you found the slat kicked out the same day she went after that guy, since he has, apparently been trouble before.  I would never leave her outside unattended with him around -the next time, if it was him that kicked in your fence, maybe he will drop a poisoned T-bone over the fence.  The way to protect people is to protect your dog!  Feisty Fido is a good idea, but it doesn't mean you will be able to ever be lax.  Take Lori's advice - she's been there.

I've got family in Oregon. Portland to be exact. Lol.

Yeah, the bluff is big around here. But mostly the problems come from the crackaddicts and drunks. *sigh* this used to be such a peaceful town too...

    WOOHOO! Group discount! Sweet!.

Yeah. I am taking Lori's advice. Smile Maze is no longer allowed off-leash or to be alone outside. And we're working on her food refusal.  It isn't bad but she still likes to swipe food off the ground every once in awhile.  And I've also increased her NILIF as she's developing a slight attitude in the house. I swear she just hit the terrible 2's a bit late. Lol.
