    I'm sooo proud of her!

As some of you may recall, Cherokee's been a rather dog-aggressive little girl. We've been working on it for a little while now, and we've had good results. No lunging, barking, or even growling at calm dogs at least, eh, 15 or more feet away. No lunging at dogs showing aggression towards her at least..maybe 30 feet away. But that's always ONE dog, a few dogs together in the past has always gotten even more intense aggression than just one..I think it's a jealousy thing..lol.

So tonight, we're going for a walk, our normal "quick route" through the park near my house, buuut there was like..a dog training class there, I guess. So I turned off to go somewhere else when I got to thinking. I have a pouch full of tasty treats, a calm dog...I'm trying this. So, against all my instincts, we walked TOWARDS this group of 20ish dogs. Not too close, I'd guess we got about 25-30 feet away before I saw Cherokee getting a little antsy, so we stopped, I asked her to sit, she complied, and I basically stuffed my dog full of tasty treats. Cherokee just sat there calmly looking at this (relatively) huge group of dogs, and took the treats gently, when just a couple months ago (maybe weeks!) she would have been lunging and snarling and acting like psycho-dog in this situation, and IF she could've taken the treats in between the snarls, I would've practically lost a hand from the roughness.

I really sort of wanted to get closer to them, but we only had the street separating us from them, and I didn't particularly want to stand in the street...plus I figured why press it...and then the clincher was this teeny chihuahua (and its owners) coming right for us from another direction, so we just turned and left.

But I just can't believe how quickly this dog is progressing. And I feel soooo stupid for not doing this forever ago! Geesh...

    Just had to share...

You just described what I did with Shadow to ease his anxiety at meeting stranger dogs. I worked my way in, closing range until we are right there, sniffing each other. And then other times, when another dog would make the first charge or snarl or get obnoxious and Shadow would do nothing, I would reward that with bits of the pork chop I had with me.

Sometimes, a dog doesn't know that being calm is an option, a rewarding option at that. But when you help them learn that being calm is a rewarding option or, more likely, the close proximity to previous triggers need not trigger a reaction because they are reassured of their place with you, they have less to be stressed about. Or a combo of it all. Anyway, congrats to you and Cherokee.

Well I'm a little less proud today than I was yesterday (when a person walking a little schnauzer popped out of nowhere less than 10 feet from us and Cherokee actually playfully whimpered! instead of lunging and snarling...wowza!) and the day before...

Went for our walk tonight, and 20 feet down the road we passed a woman walking in the other direction..we were on the sidewalk, and she was off the curb, so..I'd say about 7 or 8 feet away, and Cherokee, for no discernable reason, barked and tried to lunge at this woman. ??? She doesn't normally have issues with people who aren't 1) talking to either of us 2) looking at her, or 3) clearly about to do one of those things. Occasionally she'll bark at a random guy, if they're especially tall or..strange looking, but this was just a normal squat woman. I guess she thought the woman was coming towards us? But she didn't do anything until she was next to us or past us... Grr..

I guess all that means is it's time to focus more on people-aggression. Somehow it's easier to work on dog-aggression though.. It's so much more socially acceptable for a dog to lunge at another dog for no reason than to lunge at a person for no reason... Sigh.
