Manuel
We decided that we would keep an eye on him or keep him in the crate if we couldn't and take him outside on the leash to try and force him to potty in front of us and then reward him with praise and maybe a small treat. In response, he has went on a potty strike and refuses to potty at all now.
Hi Manuel, congrats on your new dog. Taking him in was a very considerate thing to do.
There just is no way that you can force your dog to potty. He's already proven that he doesn't like to relieve himself in the presence of anyone. Its not reasonable at this point to think that he would be able to go if you are trying to "force him". He's already tense, and you inadvertantly may be making the situation more tense. Likely he doesn't understand the "Go Potty" command yet, but he will soon get it, the more you use it.
I would suggest taking a nice leisurely stroll around your yard with the dog on a long line (15-20 foot line). Let him walk around as he pleases, and you don't pay any attention to him. You can be watching him out of the corner of your eye, but the point is to be very calm and cool during this exercise. As you are strolling, and not paying attention to him, he will potty. The second he pottys, in a calm voice say "Go Potty." And, like you are already doing, praise like a crazy man after he is finished. He will, after repetition and consistency, put 2 and 2 together. For this guy, its not going to be a cure-all after one day. It'll take a week or so (maybe more )before he starts feeling like its OK, but he will.
Good luck and welcome to the board. You will find a wealth of information here.
