Chewing Stage

    Chewing Stage

How long does this last?  Copper is a little over a year and he is constantly wanting to tear up (anything fabric) and chew on his toys (anything rubber/hard).  He's 1/2 Australian Shepherd.  I thought he would be out of it by now or am I just mistaken?

Dogs do teethe up to 14months, depending on the breed/size, so no he's not quite out of it yet.  They also chew because they learn to love it; it is a self-rewarding activity which means hemight never grow out of it!  sorry!  If the chewing is a problem, then relieving any stress/boredom would help (more exercise/play/training, "mind games" like Hide & Seek or interactive toys)  If he is still feeling pain in his gums try soaking and freezing a rope toy or pigs ear for him, he would love that.  Our pup loved chilled carrot stickes and ice cubes too.

My heeler mix did not grow out of the chewing stage until age 3.

He does a lot of chewing towards the back of his mouth.  When I get home I'll have to look and see if he's still getting his molars in.  Knowing that it'll last a few months longer, doesn't bother me (at least I know and can be aware of it).

He LOVES ice cubes, which he gets about 1 or 2 a day (at the most).  He'll only chew the carrot sticks, but then it's just a pain in the butt cleaning up slobbery tiny pieces of carrot out of the carpet. [:'(]  I give him compressed rawhide about once every other day.  I keep meaning to go and get some raw marrow bones, but I either forget or don't get to the store before it closes.  [&:]

Sounds like he's still teething then.  I think it's not just the teeth coming through that is painful, its also when they set into the gums as the dog matures so you may not see any new ones.

Rory is almost two and the chewing hasnt diminished one bit. She has a basket of toys in the living room that she can choose from, I've pretty much broke her of chewing things she isnt supposed. A lot of dogs will continue chewing throughout their lifetime as a form of calming themsleves, like a baby does with a pacifier.
Rory has two sets of chewing items. The kind that are in her basket and the kind I bring out for special times.
I suggest working on teaching him what is ok to chew and what isnt. Plus you'll find it comes in handy for stressful situations. When we have visitors over and Rory is excited I will pull out one of her special chewing treats, she is usually so excited that she will leaave the comapny alone and happily chew her treat!

I am so lucky that Copper hasn't chewed on anything he wasn't allowed to except a sock. (bad DH, bad!)  He knows what he is allowed to chew, and/or destroy.  So he only chews on his things.  [:)]

Well then I'd count my blessings, ha ha! I just spent $30 on random femurs, cow hoofs, tendons, and junk and thats a once a week thing. She hasnt grown out of it. While she was learning what NOT to chew on we went through at least....3 remotes, a brand new ipod, toys, hats, beanies, sliiper, sandals, shoes, anything so be happy he knows what to chew on, ha ha!
