wetting on our bed

    wetting on our bed

our 6 mo old just spayed female std poodle has been an amazaingly well-behaved dog.  Has never chewed up anything.

was very easily housebroken. in the 1st week we had her...she figured out on her own, that, whenever we opened the door

for her or our other std to go out to potty..she would hear a bell ring.  ( we have one on a string on the door knob that our older

std uses to tell us she needs to go outside.).  so the pup just started nosing that bell to go out all on her own.  very smart.

we finally started trusting her to be upstairs in our bedroom with us.  sometimes she does get on the bed with us, but

usually sleeps on the cool bathroom floor or on her nice big comfy doggie bed on the floor.

my husband took the 2 poodles upstairs for the night.  he was right there next to the bed, and the pup just got up on our bed

and wet...ALOT!!!  he was totally taken by surprise.

i read at another site, there seems to be alot of 6 mo old dogs wetting on beds...but no one shed any light for the reason.

is it typical for "teenage" puppies to regress?   I never had one that did.  is she marking her territory in rivalry with the other poodle( also a spayed female at 7 years old)?  there is of course some rivalry with the older poodle usually just over rawhides.  no fighting, just guarding them from each other and then trying to steal it.  they eat and sleep together in peace...play together...seem to really like each other.

she is definitely more attached to me.  is she marking her scent over my husbands?  she is very affectionate to him.  just goes to me 1st.

do they sometimes get bladder infections after being spayed...it has just been 2 weeks since her surgery.

i feel we should put her back in her crate for the night like we used to. till i figure out why this happened.

if anyone has any info...i would greatly appreciate it.  i want to trust her..i know some people dont think dogs should share a bed with you.

i never did until we got the 7 yr old.  because i had read it is not a good thing to do.

but  i have never had trouble with the 7 yr old not respecting me as pack leader. i do alot of obedience training

with all the dogs we have/have had....35 years.  so i had not been worried that their sleeping in our bed would lower their opinion of me. if i felt it did...i would stop.

we actually feel horrified that she did this...was it intentional..was she complaining or trying to tell us something?

or just a puppy accident.  one time thing...or a mistake to allow her such privilege to sleep in a people/master's bed,

    so she was dissing us???

    does anyone have any answers?

I'm sorry, I don't have any answers. In my opinion, if could be any of the things you mention. One of my dogs has done something similar a couple times (only on her own bed). It was just that she was excited and didn't want to leave the room to pee. Kind of like a kid playing who doesn't want to leave the game and ends up peeing his pants. That's how I analyzed it anyway.

I'm one who doesn't let the dogs on our bed. Not because of any pack leader stuff (because I'm already a strong leader) but because they're dogs. They have their own beds. So, that would be my advice to you. Whatever the reason she peed, I would move them off the people's bed.

That way, you can see if it happens in other situations or if anything else is going on.

I would not write this one off as dominance or marking yet.  It's a puppy and often they just need to learn that ALL of the house counts as inside the house.  Also, if they are going to go indoors they usually go somewhere that they aren't typically napping or playing, and somewhere squishy like the grass.  My dogs aren't usually in our bedroom, so when Kenya got sick and couldn't hold it, she got up on the bed and went there.  To her, that feels the most like grass, and it's an area of the house that would be considered the "edge" to her (ie,she wouldn't want to go right in the middle of the living room floor where she spends most of her time).

I think you should put her back in the crate for now, not because she is bad, but b/c she might just need a refresher in potty training.  I would not get too concerned over dominance, marking, etc after only one accident.

My dogs are allowed on the bed, the couch, etc.  The thing is, they do not abuse this privilege.  Usually if a dog is on the couch and I come sit down, the dog leaves.  They rarely get up on the bed.  They have dog beds on the floor that they prefer.  I have no problems with dogs on furniture and I don't use furniture to establish leadership.

i agree with MRV about being a puppy and getting too excited to leave the room to potty...

i thought coco was completely house trained too... until i found out that sometimes when i got up in the middle of the night to go pee...she would sneak off into my sister's room and pee there... just so she wouldnt have to go outside...

anyways... coco also peed on my bed a few times... the first few times was my fault because she wasnt completely house trained...

however, the VERY last time she peed in my bed, and in my house... i dunno why she did it... i JUST made my bed with all brand new sheets, and a brand new down comforter and everything... maybe because it was all brand new and didnt have my scent on it yet?  I'm not sure... but i was right there in bed with her, and she just squatted right in front of me and went!  I had NEVER yelled at her or punished her for soiling in the house...but BOY was I mad!  1. because it was all brand new, 2. because i worked so hard to house trained her... and she was getting too old to soil in the house!

so i went off at her!  i scolded her, and while i had to get up in the middle of the night to launder and clean everything, i figured, if i wasnt going to sleep, she wasnt either! so i crated her.... i know i know.. youre not supposed to use it as punishment...but the crate worked because she HATES to be seperated from me against her will (she goes in the crate by herself all the time.) and the separation was punishment, not the crate itself.....

it's weird though... that was the only time i ever scolded her.. and it actually worked! she NEVER went in the house since then!

I remember Kobi as a pup did the exact same thing. He was immediately banned for a very long time so it never happened again. Now he is allowed on our bed - if we're not in it. It is his favourite spot in the morning when DH is getting ready for work. Couch is a NO! NO! I refuse to have my furniture smell of dog or covered with dog hair and droll. I also refuse to live with blankets thrown over everything. But that is just me. Kobi used to have his own chair. A big old comfy leather one. About a year ago I rearranged the furniture and he has never used it since. I guess he doesn;t like that corner of the room. Too bad, so sad!

i read at another site, there seems to be alot of 6 mo old dogs wetting on beds...but no one shed any light for the reason.

dogs like to pee on absorbent surfaces that aren't part of their regular eating/sleeping areas. That's why they pee on beds, nip off to the back room and pee on the carpet, etc. Six month old dogs often are mistakenly thought to be fully housebroken by their owners who relax their diligence and whoops, mistakes happen. Don't read too much into it.
