My dog bites me when I am on the phone

walk away from him. As soon as he starts to jump up at you, leave the room, close yourself in a bedroom, go outside, wherever you have to go to get away from him. If he barks, ignor him and move farther away.

My dog only bites me when I am on the phone.  Other people in the house can talk on the phone and he is OK  The only way I can talk is if I put him in my lap and pet him.  I have tried putting him in his crate, but then he barks.  I have also tried making him sit for a treat, but this has to be repeated until I am off the phone.  I know he wants my undivided attention.  How do I correct this problem?

It sounds like you are a beginner at this and could use some help from training classes.  Till then, keep in mind that you are supposed to be the one training the dog, not the other way around LOL.  Google on NILIF, for a start.  But think about getting into a good positive reinforcement type training class where you can not only learn to teach the dog some skills, but how to have a behaviorally healthy dog.  Check out the new clicker links thread on this forum, too. 

If you pay attention to that behavior he is getting exactly what he wants........ignoring him is a way of handling it, but if it gets out of hand, there are some other ways of handling this....like noise aversion.....a sharp "Ah, Ah...or Eh, Eh" works in my house, but my dogs were trained to listen to that.....

 I just wanted to remind that sometimes a short separation can be a good thing.  Unwanted behavior in my house gets the dog ignored.  Really bratty behavior earns a 2 minute time out.  Upon the return of the dog to the "pack" area, the dog gets ignored for a few more minutes.  Afterwards I'll request a behavior or a series of behaviors and then give a reward.  (Not a treat but a chest rub and a good boy type of thing.)  In my experience I have found this to work wonders in extinguishing bad behavior.
 

The question I had was whether it was an actual bite or just mouthing. Mouthing can often be a plea for attention, such as petting.
